Help identify what this button does!
 

Someone decided to bypass a tubular lock in a small laundry room. After bypassing the lock, the person then lifted the panel to discover one white button with the word cherry on it and some electrical information.

The box shown in the first image is a smart card reader. The inside shot is of the wires going to the smart card reader in the front, and also to the button. One thinks that since the panel was locked, this button, or something inside of it may be of some use.

The smart card reader box is a greenwald industries product.

Pressing the button does not do anything from what they can see.

Someone must have an idea here.

I have to ask this.... whats your deal with washing machines and dryers?????

The person is curious and explores where most do not.

It looks like to trip switch.
It "trips" when the cover is removed.
It probably disables the machine or reader when the cover is removed.

It is a 10 amp 120 volt breaker basically.

A normal wall circuit in a home is a 20 amp line.
There is usually 1 20 amp circuit in a room.
This same line runs ALL the wall outlets and lights in a room.

My best guess....
When you remove the cover the machine "dies".
Holding the button down "should" enable the machine and NOT shock the holder.

CHERRY are a components manufacturer in Mexico for parts for commerical, heavy-duty washing machines like SpeedQueen,Maytag & some Whirlpool as well as Sears et al. This is part of the machine associated with a timing cam to determine how much drying time is purchased.

An analog logic circuit.

Yup. If you remove those two wires from the switch terminals and short them with a paperclip or alligator clip jumper wire or whatever other means, the machine won't know the cover is off and will operate normally with or without the cover.

The person still has the cover. It was opened via the tubular lock. So no parts were damaged. The person was looking for some sort of switch to activate the machine without charging. So pretty much, this looks like a dead end?

I dont understand the purpose of the switch though. Why would they have that?

Looks like the next step of attack would be a smart card reader/writer. SWIM has read about people trying that, but cannot perform a hex dump properly. :sigh: Its not looking good

'Cos Greenwald Industries are tops in the field in the USA for commerical laundries products.
They started with the simple coin chutes & have now moved in to the smart card type.
There are readers about but am no longer sure of the price these days.

The reader/writers are relatively cheap. But finding one that actually works is another thing entirely.

People know me for going way too far when determined. I most likely picked that trait up from amphetamine love :)

Trying to hack washing machines?

Somehow the reader will output some kind of signal to the main control board. It may be a solid DC voltage, it may be an analog signal, or a digital signal. If you trace the reader output to the control board, you may see a relay which triggers the regular manual controls for the machine. You may see a microprocessor. This will vary from unit to unit, so I can't be any more specific in this instance.

If you see a relay, bypass it or trigger it by any obvious method. If you see a microprocessor, you can research the data-sheet for the device and possibly determine which pins to jumper. For a microprocessor, just search the number in google along with "data sheet" - lm555 datasheet - for instance.

Or, you could try to HERF the reader through the slot. EMP is a fun thing. There are schematics for devices smaller than an iPod nano which can be used at very-near proximity.
