Yep. IBM has to get with the times or go out of business. They have been propped up by government contracts and not much else for decades.

Unless you work for IBM or you're holding IBM stock.. I don't see why anyone would care.

they have many corporate customers running applications on mainframe, you would think this gives them an advantage to sell other products.

I did and robot name Ryan ask for my code,my name and phone number, then he said or it said give me $34.99 to activate the code as we need it to spend on internet bla bla bla?
I replied NO,but it just keep nagging for $34.99??
Does it make sense?
I can watch PBS with my cable provider, but just want to stream it?

Re: IBM layoff 1500 workers

well ,I copied the code from my TV screen and come back to my pc,type in pbs.org/activate ,but get a 411 message, site not found.
according to some old instructions of Roku,I am supposed to go to My Roku, click on PBS and then it will prompt me for the code.
But the PBS logo when I click on it wont open,so I went to another site where there is live support,it asked for my name, phone and code.
then it asked for $34.99,there is an option of refuse, agree,I chose refuse, then it then said it need money to pay for upkeep and new enhancement, now I wonder if this is a scam, but there is no other way to activate.
May be I should ask Roku, but Roku does not seem to have customer service, why the hack is its stock going to $100.share?

Re: IBM layoff 1500 workers

well,I just tried again, get a code from the TV screen and then come back to my PC,open Chrome and typed in PBS.ORG/ACTIVATE,the screen is there, type in the code and now I am watching PBS on my TV set.
No live support asking for my name and phone number and $34.99?
That was last night,I wonder if this is a scam site.

They used to be innovative but that was decades ago.
Not sure what IBM does now that cannot be done any number of other companies - for cheaper.

Re: IBM layoff 1500 workers

When mainframe was where you do all your processing,IBM is KING,DEC,Sperry ,Wang cant compete.
Then comes the PC with its operating system,Didnt IBM come up with an operating system of its own?
IBM employees do not seem to adapt well outside IBM,is it the IBM culture or they just cant do the grunt work?
IBM pays well and offers good benefits, and they have to look smart and dress smart,

That's nuts. I think somebody was attempting to scam you.. but I'm not sure how you would have ended up somewhere where a guy was asking for $35. The most Roku apps do is ask you to link your cable provider. My wife does all the Roku activations but I would have assumed that a channel broadcast over the air for free wouldn't require you to link your cable provider on Roku.

Really weird you were asked for money, lol.

Re: IBM layoff 1500 workers

It is a scam, just like someone has a software problem and try to find help and went to a site which said it would solve the problem but you have to pay?

phaz0rz 06-08-2019 08:09 AM

Re: IBM layoff 1500 workers

Yeah, that's what I think too. I just don't understand how you were directed to a scam page when trying to watch PBS on Roku. :noidea:

Third party seller? Or google ad spam maybe. PBS is defo free and Roku you only should have to pay for no commercials.

I SWEAR it looks just like the PBS.ORG website, except in the lower right corner there is live support.
as soon as I show up,it ask for my code, name and phone number ,then ask for 34.99 dollars?

Well, you could hook up a bunny ear antenna, press the "input" button on your remote, and watch PBS over the air for free if you can't get it to work on Roku. My office TV is antenna only.

Re: IBM layoff 1500 workers

I have PBS on my other TV set in another room, that TV set does not use Roku,it uses Windstream Kinetic receiver.
I get one receiver free ,but if I want another one for the TV set in the other room,I have to pay $9.99 a month extra.
Which I think is a waste of money, since I have Roku to stream most stations like Youtube,AMZN,NFLX,TUBI,etc ,why should I pay 9.99 to Winstream FOR A SECOND RECEIVER.
Of course I can unplug the receiver from one tv set and use it on another Tv ,but why bother?
Windstream has not been doing well, new households do not need landlines, they have their cell phones, but Windstream offers internet service and Dishnetwork TV so it manages to hold on to existing landline customers who want to surf on internet,a combo deal of landline phone, internet and TV,I pay like $135 a month with fast speed internet,

phaz0rz 06-08-2019 02:44 PM

Re: IBM layoff 1500 workers

You don't have to pay any monthly fee to watch PBS. It's broadcast over the air for free just like it was in the 1950's.

You're talking about paying for a cable subscription which isn't necessary for channels you can pickup for free with an antenna. You can get an antenna from Walmart for $5 and then you'll have unlimited access to PBS, CBS, ABC, NBC, Fox, and any other broadcast channels in your area.

This is the thing you need:

No need to pay more money to anybody.

Re: IBM layoff 1500 workers

unfortunately there is one chanel I watch which is not free,so I have to pay Windstream.
It is expensive,I get 200 chanels but I only need one now.

Re: IBM layoff 1500 workers

I look into Sling,it is no bargain either,so I just stay with Windstream for its package deal-phone,tv ,fast speed internet.
They have good service,ifI have a problem,they come same day,in 2-3 hours.
