WHO declares global virus emergency after deadliest day for China

THE World Health Organisation yesterday declared a global emergency over the deadly coronavirus outbreak in China, in acknowledgement of the threat the disease poses to the world.

The warning, officially known as a “public health emergency of international concern” and defined as an “extraordinary event”, is the highest alert the UN health agency can issue.

You kill a bear with a gun.

I don't like all the discrimination going on because the chinese have different diets than Americans. A citizen in Wuhan would probably think we are disgusting for eating hotdogs.

I do agree it's way worse than what's being reported, for a number of reasons. China simply doesn't have the resources to deal with this adequately. I don't think any country would, with as rapid as the virus is spreading.

As of yesterday, China is warning citizens to "take care of" their pets or risk having them killed by the government, in an attempt to slow the spread of the virus.

Scary stuff. Basically you either keep your pet inside 24/7 or risk having them euthanized by Winnie the Pooh's regime.

Chinese are not eating much seafood these days !

Good to see you looking on the bright side. :)

Personally in my life I see people stocking up on survival supplies (cleaning supplies, n95 masks, more food, etc). People are prepping.

And I also see a lot of naysayers say it's no big deal.

It seems split 50/50 right now.

Friendly reminder that if you're going to prep, spend the few extra dollars for p100 masks. Go big or go.... to your grave.

My Chinese suppliers claim that they will begin shipping on the 15th but I don't believe it to be the case. I imagine we are still several weeks out from items being able to be exported from China

Amazing how fast these facts change now.
At last count the death toll stands at 304.
I have no doubt the final count will be a lot higher than SARS ever was.

Some evidence that it's way worse than reported.

Also demonstrates how desperately China is working to censor this from the rest of the world. They know it would kill their economy if the real numbers leaked out.

There are dead people everywhere. You're only added to the official death toll if you're tested and confirmed to have the virus before you die. There's a shortage of test kits and many people with the virus have to be tested multiple times before testing positively. The vast majority of those dying are being labeled by CCP as "pneumonia" or "old age" deaths despite having the virus.

All those factors combined add up to something out of a horror movie. I guess I'll continue monitoring the situation while hoping I can restock my inventory soon. :typing:

On the contrary, Chinese New Year is definitely the worst time of year to have a non-vaccinated virus breakout. Most who work in Chinese cities go back to rural China to visit their family during CNY. Hence the spread. It's almost like this was engineered and was released immediately before CNY to make sure it would spread as much as possible. What are the chances of some naturally mutated virus just happening to release itself right before all of the biggest social gatherings in China? Probably 1 in a billion.

And what about the beauty parlors and nail salons?

They're probably doing fine since there are only like 3 confirmed cases in the USA. The US media isn't talking about coronavirus for a good reason (they want to avoid creating a panic).

I've been reading that Asian males are particularly susceptible to this virus, which would explain why it's spreading so rapidly in China while not spreading very fast in the rest of the world. There are science journal articles about it.. but I don't think it's enough to draw any conclusions yet.

could be those who dont eat well, have a weak immune system?

It's got to do with Asians naturally having a higher concentration of a specific enzyme in their lungs. I'll try to post some info for you a little later.

EDIT: here is one of the articles suggesting Asian males are more susceptible due to a higher concentration of ACE2 enzymes - https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...01.26.919985v1

Afraid there will be many other cases like this ,there are reported many infected and they do not have at moment enough hospital structure to treat all

Re: Corona Virus

Wuhan Coronavirus Likely to Soon Be Declared a Pandemic, Scientists Warn

Scientists and disease experts say the Wuhan coronavirus outbreak could soon be declared a pandemic.

The World Health Organisation last week designated the coronavirus – whose scientific name is 2019-nCoV – a "public-health emergency of international concern."

Calling the virus a pandemic would take it to a new level, however, since that term refers to a more global outbreak.

The coronavirus is "very, very transmissible, and it almost certainly is going to be a pandemic," Anthony Fauci, the director of the US's National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, told The New York Times on Sunday.

Here are criteria for a virus to be labelled a pandemic:

The WHO defines a pandemic as "the worldwide spread of a new disease."
A pandemic disease spreads across "several countries or continents, usually affecting a large number of people," according to the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.
A viral outbreak could be characterised as a pandemic if it is "markedly different from recently circulating strains" and if "humans have little or no immunity" to it, according to the UK's Health and Safety Executive.
A disease becomes a pandemic when it can infect many people over a large area, be transferred from person to person, and cause clinical illness, the HSE said.
An epidemic, by contrast, refers to a more localised or regional outbreak rather than a global one. That's what health agencies have so far considered the coronavirus outbreak to be.

The CDC says an epidemic is an "increase, often sudden, in the number of cases of a disease above what is normally expected in that population in that area."

Similarly, the WHO defines an epidemic as the "occurrence in a community or region of cases of an illness, specific health-related behaviour, or other health-related events clearly in excess of normal expectancy."

Thomas Frieden, a former CDC director, told The Times that it is "increasingly unlikely" that the coronavirus "can be contained."

He added: "It is therefore likely that it will spread, as flu and other organisms do, but we still don't know how far, wide, or deadly it will be."

Robert Webster, an infectious-disease expert at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, told The Associated Press on Sunday that "it sounds and looks as if it's going to be a very highly transmissible virus."

The Wuhan coronavirus has killed at least 362 people and infected more than 17,000 other people in more than 24 countries since the first cases were reported in December.

All but one of those deaths were in China; on Saturday, a man in the Philippines became the first to die of the virus outside China.
