would you buy a lobster which died yesterday
 

I was at a store which sells live lobsters in tank 14.99/lb,but I also saw dead ones for 5.99/lb and the clerk said it died yesterday.
Is it safe to eat?

yes,they used to cook the lobster and sell it at 6.99/lb,now they sell it RAW

Beats the price of 14.99/lb - just boil.

If you trust that store then go for it - I would.

I can't say for sure about lobsters, but I used to sell Blue Crabs. Blue crabs start producing Ammonia as their bodies decay within a couple hours of being dead - especially if they aren't kept cool.

Lobsters are probably in the same family. I'd say if there's no Ammonia smell you're good to go.

thanks,but it would be odd for a shopper to pick up the lobster and smell it?
But at least they remove it from the tank.
In another store,I saw 2 catfish lying bellyup in the tank while the others swim around it?
Inflation is here,I see price increase on most items !

lol, maybe it's odd in your area. I worked at a local seafood market for years and we had customers sniff everything from fresh shrimp to frozen lobster tails to catfish fillets.

I just looked it up and google says ALL shellfish (including lobster) produce Ammonia shortly after dying. That's probably why the store has them marked down so low. They're trying to get rid of those lobsters before they become toxic to eat.

The used to cook these lobsters and then sell them,I dont know why they dont do it now,?

They go bad pretty fast after they die.

Funny enough they were once feed to prisoners and they found it to be cruel and unusual punishment.

Long ago,those who went to MAINE for vacation,the kids will catch and play with them,when dinner time comes,they just leave it on the porch to die.
These days I think those lobsters for sale in supermarkets come from Canada,not Maine,thats why they are cheaper,

There is a French restaurant in Houston,Le Cep,it would feature Maine lobster clam bake for 49.99 on Friday,they order from Fulton Market and they arrive same day and they are fresh,fresher than those kept in tanks in supermarket.
They dont have it every Friday so you have to get email notfiication
