Doggie bag

this has nothing to do with stealth or selling but it has been bugging me and trying to find out why?
I meet with a group for dinner on a regular basis,we each order one dish and share.
There is one person who always pick up the remainders ,no matter how little or how much is left on the plate ,shoving it into a styrofoam container with different compartments saying it is better than cooking your own meals.
Restaurant food is good when it first come out and piping hot, after sitting around and being picked over,it is just not the same anymore, what is left is just some juice and ??,why does anyone want to take them home and heat it up the next day?
I can see if some one left half a duck or steak untouched but drips of veggies and ??
Not to mention these days the restaurants have replaced the cook with the dishwasher to do the cooking.
BTW,this person is or was quite well heeled.

Some people just don't like seeing waste...I know a bunch like that

agent006140 10-27-2024 07:37 AM

Re: Doggie bag

The only ones who do that are the ones who do not know how to cook the same dishes, but there is hardly anything left ?You figure if it is good, there wont be any leftover.

Re: Doggie bag

I don't find it worth it to take food if there is hardly anything left - valid point - I guess your friend might be odd...does he/she take other people's leftovers too? ...

That person took ALL ,if there are 6 diners and each orders one dish, there are 6 dishes on the table ,some have very little left, some have more left.
At one time,I think may be there is a pet,but NO.

Oh ok, if he/she took other people's leftovers and doesn't have a pet...that's gross to eat others leftovers - unless maybe there is composting going on...you could ask that...compost piling

Re: Doggie bag

Those 6 dishes would be shared by all six diners, placed in the middle of the table with serving spoons,so it is safe.
I will ask next time.
I read recently in Philipines, someone will pick up the leftover chicken dishes in restaurants and sell them in poor neighborhoods?

Its true. They do something similar in China with drain grease, strain it and sell to restaurants as cooking oil

One of the regular who drinks green tea, decided not to order green tea as it is not free?
It is never free.
I would suggest to him next time to bring his own tea bag and order just hot water!!

You are suggesting to bring a tea bag to a restaurant - that's pretty cheap hah and screws over the restaurant business...

Re: Doggie bag

I recall when I was in NYC,there is a neighborhood casual dining place-hamburger,hot dog and a condiment bar with lettuce, tomato slices.
4 elderly ladies came with their own sandwich and tea bags, help themselves with lettuce and tomato and hot water, complained the water is not hot enough .
While visiting a friend in Fort Layderdale, the local diners of a polular hamburger joint will buy a cheap burger, then help themselves with free tomato and lettuce, take the ketchup and mayonaise ,mixed them together to form salad dressing, voila,a nice free salad to go with their cheap hamburger,
Not sure if it is mayonaise ,I never see mayonaise at hamburger joint?

rsot 02-26-2025 11:30 AM

Re: Doggie bag

Those ladies who complained that the water is not hot enough should be banned from the dining place - ungrateful cheapies.

Mayonnaise exists at the hamburger joints - meh, this free salad creation isn't end of the world...also cheap move but just vegetables...

agent006140 02-26-2025 11:34 AM

Re: Doggie bag

what does a fast food eater do with mayonaise?
I have seen them putting ketchup on their burger but mayonaise?
If it is a fish sandwich, there is tar tar sauce.
As a college student many moons ago,my treat is a McDonald fish sandwich, these days the fish tastes like cardboard paper.

? Not sure what you mean - mayonnaise has a texture/taste some people like - many people use it with fries, in the burger, on hotdog, etc

agent006140 02-27-2025 09:51 AM

Re: Doggie bag

sorry,I have never seen anyone using mayonaisse with their hot dog, burger or fries.
I use them for making potato salad and devil egg, mixed with mustard.
OOPS,I will have a tuna sandwish for lunch,I will add some mayonaise to make it tastier !

rsot 02-27-2025 09:58 AM

Re: Doggie bag

To each their own - I have seen plenty of ppl using mayo on those items - enjoy the tuna sandwich...mayo does make that have a nice texture hah

May be I am not clear on this doggie bag situation-
In a traditional Chinese restaurant, each person orders a dish, all the dishes will be placed in the center of the table with serving spoons so we get to try every dish.
the leftovers are safe to take home, reheat and consume !
But most of the time, there is not much left worth taking home.

Have you not considered you could actually ask them bluntly privately?

Why not visit their home and figure out what other demons could be leading to these odd behaviours

Seems abit malicious to vent online, could they be struggling for cash and eating the remains to save money on the next meals?

agent006140 05-14-2025 10:24 PM

Re: Doggie bag

This person has been doing this every time, there are more left over now as people seem to order too much.
I am not venting,I just try t o find out why?
This person drives a Lexus, but then she could be cash poor, once she said her HOA/month runs into $600.
I have seen people pickup sushi at a party,I have seen hostess taking what we bought from restaurant to her party and fed it to her dogs !
In some society, watching what a family have for dinner gives you a pretty good idea of their financial situation,as it is usually attended by all members of the family and is the most important meal of the day.

It would be too INVASIVE -going to someone's house and find out why?
Look into the fridge?look at the furniture? look at the lawn and backyard?
Food is not really expensive unless you have a large family.

If you have poor communication skills, I could see why. But in terms of helping out friends, I’d always prioritise asking tough questions and helping fellow humans, especially someone who is in a regular group of friends I hang out with.

Do you find yourself always venting about people’s behaviours and leading a confrontation free life?

Generally you’d start with a relatable story of a time when you used to do that and gently ease into a conversation privately and say look, if you ever need a hand or someone to talk to about what’s going on let me know. I don’t want to come across as weird or invasive but looking out for you, I’d love to know how I can help.
