Can US customs open and seize a package marked important document?
 

Hi!
My parents are trying to send me a package from Europe through DHL that contains personal documents but they have been told that the US customs opens those types of packages and verifies the identity of the person receiving the package.
Did anyone else have that happen to them or have you ever heard any stories about that? Please let me know. Thank you!

they can open anything they want, I think a docs package like that is very unlikely to be searched though.....

what have they told you has happened to it

The lady at DHL told my mom that they had people that would send docs like passports or ID cards and US customs would open the packages and verify the identity and the status of the person receiving the documents. Then immigration would come to the address on the package and interview the person.

my mum send my german ID and my birth certificate by regular mail (DHL - USPS).

First time she put it into a greeting card, the second, the birth certificate was send by regular mail (DHL - USPS).

And nobody checks it.......so i would not think too much about it.

Immigration/ Customs has better things to do than check personal documents......

actually it is not happen usually,we sent many documents about shipping,they never open it.

@ Dennnis, thanks for the info, I guess we will try regular USPS. It's just that the lady at DHL really freaked out my mom. I guess we won't try DHL.
