If you select to UPGRADE your windows vista to windows 7, you will keep all your current files.
If you decide to format your drive then of course you'll loose your files, in that case just back-up everything to DVD, then make a fresh install of windows 7 which is what i recommend you too do.
But if your in-experienced, just do an upgrade :-)
How do I do an upgrade? When I go to the upgrade Windows section it only takes me to Windows website to buy Windows 7, but I've already got it on a disc. So if I just put the Windows 7 disc in on startup that will reformat it and lose all my files?
Put the disc in drive now, then reboot your computer. Your computer will detect the disc on start-up, you may have too press any key too boot the disc. Once windows 7 is booted into the disc options, select UPGRADE.
From their on in it should be straight-forward. Follow on screen instructions :-)
I have never done an upgrade myself, its usually a clean install. But good luck
