Here is the thing...
Google is a very loved and respected company. They have had a few problems, yes, but most people think very highly of them. Their reputation is excellent.
Yahoo, Lycos, Excite, Overstock, Auctions.com, MSN and others have tried very hard to make a go of auctions and they couldn't.
eBay, on the other hand, has always had it's share of controversy. They are known for having counterfeit merchandise - nearly every news story about customs seizures mentions eBay sellers - in the same sentence with "flea markets". Sellers have hated them for years, Many buyers don't like them either. They remain successful as they have no meaningful competition.
Could Google compete with them? SURE! Of course they could. In fact, they are the ONE company that could pull it off.
But why would they want to? They have a great reputation, why would they risk tarnishing it? If the auctions fail, they look bad. If they succeed, then they inherit the same problems that eBay has. Either way, it would not be a good business decision.
I applaud the petition, I just don't see it going anywhere.
