| GrannyT | 08-02-2011 05:38 AM | Blackberry I live in an area that doesn't get a mobile signal but I have to go off farm a lot and I need to keep in touch with what is happening on my internet business. It is becoming a huge problem as I'm getting much busier.
I have been advised to get a Blackberry but because I'm such a blonde when it comes to technology I need some advise.
I can pick one up off Ebay for around £60 that is 'unlocked'. It's 2G (Really? Fancy that!)
I don't want to sign up for a contract I want to be on pay as you go. (This is for stealth) Can I do this?
What would some of you techie guys suggest I get?
I need to be able to receive and send e.mails and receive calls from my soho66 number.
Any advise greatfully received |
Other folx will prob contribute - I have not much experience with this =(
You can thank me for another useless post =) |

I do know that if a phone is unlocked - it can be used with any provider - just make sure the phone accepts a sim card. |
| unkown5454 | 08-02-2011 03:42 PM | All you need to look for with unlocked phones is the frequency at which the carrier's service you want runs on and if the phone is capable of operating on such frequency.
You guys across the pond are 1800MHz and 900MHz I believe for normal 2G frequencies. I am not sure what your 3G is. |

A £60 Blackberry? The cheapest Blackberry that can do the job is the Blackberry 8900 Javelin.
If you want Pay As You Go, I recommend picking up a GiffGaff simcard. They use O2s network so very good coverage and you pay as you go like £10 a month for internet and alot of minutes oh and unlimited text messages.
Only problem with all these PayAsYouGo simcards they like you to register, and you never know they could potentially give out info.

| robsut | 08-02-2011 04:40 PM | Hi, it will make no odds about which phone you get, if you are not getting a signal it wont work, not even the mobile internet, but if you are going to use a phone while you are out an about i recommend the iphone 4 as it will connect automatically to the internet in any wifi hotspot or unsecured connection, hope that helps. Any decent phone with wifi will automatically connect to unsecured networks.
Why pay £400+ for an iphone? GrannyT is using it for stealth purposes only. |
| ShadyOne | 08-02-2011 05:14 PM | What BlackBerry are you looking at getting? |
| GrannyT | 08-02-2011 05:24 PM | Blackberry Curve ShadyOne - it looks like something even I could use.
Basically when I'm away from the farm I want to be able to send and receive emails and take and make calls. Pay as you go. I'm not technically minded so most of the clever stuff will be wasted on me. There are so many phones and so many people wanting to sell them that I get lost in the b****hit
Help!!!!

| ShadyOne | 08-02-2011 05:36 PM | Their are multiple models in the 'Curve' selection.
I would say the '8520' is good choice, has 3G and will be around £80 used.
BlackBerry's have a user friendly side and an extremely techie side. You will be fine, stop being afraid of technology, I know you will be BlackBerry Messaging within a week. |
| GrannyT | 08-02-2011 05:38 PM | I knew you wouldn't let me down pet - I'm off to buy one now - Thanks Jedi Knight!!
:pop2: |
| ShadyOne | 08-02-2011 05:42 PM | Check it is 3G first, I sort of just said that without any research.
I owned one once but can't really remember, I will look now as well.
Edit: It is not 3G, here is a nice list of all BlackBerry's and their networking features: List of BlackBerry products - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A 3G BlackBerry I noticed on that list, within that £70-80 price range is the 'Bold 9000'. |
| toplevelseller | 08-09-2011 10:56 AM | blackberrys can connect to wifi to recieve emails and send, but if your on a farm with no signal this would be hard. even the iPhone 4 would not work i do not think.
blackberry is good for connecting to your internet connection but as for signal i am not sure about this. Also try going for 3G more faster but harder to get signal only down site. 2G is just your average network.. o2,voda,orange..etc.
