Do you talk to your relatives about your internet business?
 

I act like I don't know jack about the internet or how to sell. What you guys do? I had a neigbor who was talking to the mailman that he was waiting on some idiot from ebay to send him something. Made me laugh internally.

Me I am a dumb ass..I tend to speak too much...now i am embarrased as hell as far as them seeing my ebay going down...from now on I am going stealth with everything:)

I encourage my kids to trade on EB and I help them as much as I can. Two now have good secondary incomes

Everybody knows I sell on Ebay and Amazon. Otherwise people would wonder how I make so much money.

My lady speaks too much, I had to put the word down selling on eBay and then talking about my business is two seperate things she know now not to talk about my business she had to get a talking too..

never tell people what you sell, they will copy it

i tell people i do it as a hobby,making few extra £ on my spare time.

I would say about 1,000 people know of my business. I do not sell phakes, but I dont have a problem buying them for myself or others.

1,000 know your biz on facebook or dam you really talk to that many people everyday in person? lol - better hope 1 of those is not paypal or ebay exec jealous people!

I tell people I sell stuff online if they ask, I never say anything more specific than "clothing" or "electronics" and I don't say how much I make.

As much as I want to brag :P

I make a living selling online.

The only thing I tell family is that I sell online.
I never provide a seller's name.

I am old enough to get away with telling normal people that I retired early in life since I did SO well at my job.
I make money now by trading in the stock market.
That tends to explain my independent lifestyle and my collection of nice cars.

Yet another thread where you want to know what we do.

I don't tell anybody my Business, friends would expect me to pay for everything when we out on the lash if they knew what i earned lol

Here is what happened to me.

I have folks that think this selling on ebay is awesome, I always tell them to not tell people what I sell for the obvious reason. My folks know but thats it.

I guess at break at work or something my Dad was talking to one of his employees about ebay since She was telling him about how she would like to know more about it. He said that I sold stuff on there for a living and makes pretty good living doing it too. Before I knew it He was telling me she wanted to call me about it and ask some questions. She calls and didnt know anything at all. I just said I will come over and show you how to get started selling. I went, spend 3-4hrs showing here exactly how to do everything down to photo, listings,etc.

A week or 2 later I see a new competitor of mine using my photos, and my text to sell exactly the items I had. nearly all my listings down to a "T"

The funny thing is I sometimes use humor in my listings if there is a place for it. She even used that in Her listings, Nothing anyone else would have done but me. I was pissed and called Dad up and said "what the Hell"?.

I guess sometime over the previous year or so He mentioned my niche out of the blue in conversation due to how cool he thought it was that I quit an aviation engineering job for ebay full time.

She figured how to source the items and just copied it all the way.

I called here and chewed her out and she was just saying she was helping friend that needed some extra money. I turned her into ebay also and she ended up stopping.

The main thing is if you tell family at all, Make sure you emphasis WHY you dont want people to know. NO MATTER how proud they are of you for doing so well.

I told my Mom, told her NOT to tell anyone and then by the end of the week ran into at least 3 people she blabbed to. Learned my lesson, I don't even tell my friends my EBAY id or what I sell.

I would never tell anybody my Ebay user ID. That is just asking for trouble :doh:

Hobby only - I never say specifics but all the folx her have wisely spoken.

I never told anybody until my next door nabber bought something from my eby shop & I got to know when I was printing label... My god its no 19 and mine in 27. I didn't write my return address but she got to know that it me.

I like to tell everyone what I do, seems to be over most people's heads anyway, the more I tell people what I do the less they seem to make sense out of it lol. I like to let it all hang out in public to so whenever anyone see's me lounging around at starbucks they're like "Hey, there's that guy with all the phones and credit cards lounging around with his laptop again, still can't figure out what he does but he sure as heck is doing something" lol
