Amazon has averaged a 4.4% profit margin over the last 5 years. Actually, that is pretty good for a business their size.
Generaly speaking, the larger a business grows, the lower their profit margins become.
And, Amazon invests a TON of money back into their business. They tend to think more in the long term. And it has paid off for them. They have 10% of the e-commerce pie in North America, which is HUGE. They are to ebooks what Apple is to music. And their web services division provides services to a lot of companies, including many in the Fortune 500.
They are going to be around for quite awhile.
