been there, trapped in an office with Mr B.O and Ms Utter Bitc h.....never want to go back.

Rather work alone and socialise when I wish...

Having to do a real-world project right now, with bunch of females, a few of which trying to be top-dog...yawn

Many years ago, I worked with someone who smelled - really, REALLY bad. He was a nice guy and nobody wanted to say anything, but it got worse and worse over time.

This was not your normal annoying but light BO smell, it was like rotting flesh covered with Pierre Cardin and that had been festering in a dirty dumpster for a few months.

I don't think he showered. I'm not talking about skipping a day or two, this was more like not showering for at least a month. Then putting on some cologne to try to cover the smell.

The thing that got me was he had a wife and she smelled perfectly normal. I don't know how she could stand to live with him in the same apartment, much less have (and I feel the vomit rising in my throat as I type this) sex with him.

Having to go into a small office with him for a meeting was like NASAL RAPE! Staying in the same room with him for more than 5 minutes made people think suicidal thoughts. I gave thanks to God that I did not have to deal with him on a regular basis.

And it was a shame, because like I said, he was a nice guy, good looking even. But he could have made a skunk dive into a wood-chipper with no regrets.

Eventually, he quit. After he left, they had to remove the furniture and carpeting from his office and get rid of it. They totally repainted and re-carpted the office and put in all new furniture. And I'll be damned if I STILL didn't catch a whiff of him whenever I passed by.

Same thing happened to me. Quite a large team of people, no-one ever said anything to the guy. One day our manager changed, and one of the first things the new manager did was to tell the guy he had a personal hygiene problem. The guy was friends with us, so basically passed it round as "damn, hate our new boss, guess what he just said to me" gossip. really hard for us all to sit there hearing him say this and be expected to sympathise, whilst we're all thinking "but he's riiiiiiight! thank god you've been told!!!" And yep, even when the guy left I swear you'd still catch a whiff from where he used to be situated- I guess that's evolution eh, making our markings hard to escape

oompah "with bunch of females, a few of which trying to be top-dog...yawn" haha I often feel the same.... why do i get the feeling if given the choice you'd also prefer working with men (like I do) :)

And that is probably the smartest thing he could do. That can negatively affect productivity just as badly as other things. Not to mention, who wants to work in an environment like that?

Are you at the auditions for the next series of The Apprentice, Oompa?

rsot 08-05-2012 03:01 PM

Ha way to pick up on the article :)

oompaloompa 08-06-2012 01:24 PM

funny you should mention apprentice actually....

no usually women are fine to work with, but there is a certain type that drive me nuts...if you do not show deference then you are their enemy..

without making sweeping statements, it is very American not to tell the employee they smell, Americans expect super-niceness. In UK your manager would usually address the funk issue.
