Looking for Unbiased Reviews of Health Insurance

I've been looking for good health insurance for a couple months now and all the reviews I've seen have been biased towards a certain company or another. It's hard to find what's real and not.

Basically I'm looking for Basic Coverage plus Vision and Dental. Price range $150-$300 a month is okay. Just for one person.

If you have good Health Insurance you recommend, let me know. And I'm not in the military so I that isn't an option. :)

Thanks thanks,

Hey aspkin Ive had United Health Care for about 2 years then my company switched to Avmed both are very good health insurance companies. Also look into blue cross blue shield but I think theyre a bit expensive.

aspkin 06-24-2008 09:42 PM

Thanks, I'll check them out.

I've heard mix reviews about Blue Shield, have you used them before?

Thanks GreenBean, I'll check the site out.

The thing with blue cross is that their expensive. Almsot everybody accepts them one plus but on the other side avmed and united healthcare is also accepted by everybody. But if you going for basics then just go avmed or united healthcare. In my opinion united health care is the best :)

I do. It's a pretty solid plan, not extremely expensive. It works for me.

One of the problems with Blueshield/Bluecross is that if there is a serious illness they can be very hard to commit to allowing treatment. It can also depend on what state you reside.
I realize that other plans are the same but I have several friends that needed to go to their Congressman for help in the treatment for their children.
Their basic plan is OK costwise.

Well maybe blue cross is better for a regular plan. As my mom has diabetes and my dad was gonna get her blue cross and they were saying $700 monthly just for her! The thing is that was about 4 or 5 years ago so maybe they've changed.

I have Full Coverage now-- BUT-when my husband and I were younger, (4-15 years ago)--
we stayed 'self insured"--even with the Pregnancy..
heres how we figured:

Family plan was like $700/month--x 12 = $8400/yr-- are we gonna be sick and rack up 8400 med bills/year? NO--

So we paid for the pregnancy--was like $5600, the years I had no kids, we saved alot, then in the last 6,7 yrs, it went up to $1100/month for fam coverage--not counting dental.

I Qualify for med disability now- so I have med Ins. My husband has 0 coverage-
He is not sickly- gets a physical every year.
Kids go for checkups- we have a major med--plan if bills are over $5k--major med stay etc..
But from what we have seen/spoken with other parents-- besides the deductibles-the
Hosp Plans do not cover :"well visits" anyhow...

So--as of 3 months ago I checked again- $1,780/month for family coverage--
Thats over $20 thousand /year--
So-we're playing Russian Roulette for now..

Aspkin, I had United years ago, loved it. As for Blue Cross, never used that but so many mixed reviews! I would hear from friends nothing but complaints once a family member became seriously ill. Like GreenBean said ... if there is a serious illness - try getting them to pay (or not drop you)!

ebayhateluv - how long did it take for you to qualify for medical disability? I've been waiting over 2 years for a hearing!

Ballsack 06-25-2008 07:04 PM

The united states actually offers free healthcare coverage. Just ask about their Guantanamo Bay plan. Not as hard as one may think to qualify :)

The_Cynic 06-26-2008 12:19 AM

If you are an honorably discharged veteran of the US military, you can get free catastrophic coverage through the VA. That's what I have, plus I pay dental and vision from my own pocket.

high deductable health savings accounts are better than self insured.

Dental insurance only covers up to $1000 or so usually, is more expensive than paying it yourself for regular checkups, and is not needed until there's a dental bill over $1000.

Vision covers the $100-$200 glasses, often won't pay for good glasses, and tends to be more expensive than what you'd pay yourself for glasses. Othrokeratology and vision surgeries aren't covered.

The best medical insurance is if you're really poor and on welfare, which then covers about everything. Also illegal immigrants get free health care because they're poor, have no social, and so you can't come after them for medical bills.

Hmmm, even though I'm hearing a lot of horror stories with United Health Care, I'm leaning on that one right now. I think all health insurance is crappy, but I should at least have something.

John14789 06-27-2008 02:20 PM

Yo aspkin believe m united health care the best choice as it paid for my surgery which $12,000 and it is almost accepted everywhere. Now if your looking for dental insurance look into delta dental I have them they the best they paid $4,000 for orthodontic work for me.

imthatguy 06-27-2008 02:38 PM

I have not had health care or dental insurance in like 6 years and it will probably be another 6 years..lol

Another option is to go to school and enroll. once you enroll you can sign up with their health and dental plan as its the law for the school to offer it. it usually only about $20 a month or so..

aspkin 06-27-2008 02:58 PM

Woah, that's not bad... I've been thinking about going back to school anyway. I also talked to a friend of mine, and my gym LifeTime fitness also offers health insurance benefits, I'm going to check into that too.

topazcorp 06-27-2008 04:38 PM

Wow it's really expensive! Here in Canada medicare insurance is free, same thing in the UK I think...

I went to 3 different schools and no such thing had ever been mentioned. Are you saying I can pay for a single course at my city college and I'll get healthcare thru them if I pay $20 a month? Doesn't sound right.
