Google laptops, are they any good?

Hey everbody!

Just got spammed with info about the Google laptops, thinking of investing in a few cause they seems to be fast little ***** and cheap :thumb:
Has anyone tried them out?

golden_monkey 04-25-2013 11:25 AM

not really useful out of the box.

you are pretty much just paying for a computer that does nothing but run chrome.

def can't run a eb4y stealth biz on one of these silly things.

Get the $1,500 Pixel.

Why shouldnt i be able to use stealth? All i need is a browser, fast UI and programs (word, etc)

MM78 04-25-2013 02:44 PM

Why not just buy a Laptop? which can probably do more than just run a few apps...

The only thing I really see as a Plus is the 6.5 hours of battery life. That's quit a bit of stealthing time.

Univerzal 04-25-2013 07:46 PM

Yeah i know but i got curious cause 120$ for a quite speedy laptop with great battery sounds awesome, if i buy a "normal" laptop i have to pay more but i can use it for more, allthough i only need this for stealth atm. I think ill wait a little bit longer so i can get some reviews to read:clap:

I understand its used and 2 generations old but its cheap and still runs all of the things you need without a hiccup. If you order the 9cell battery you can go about 6-8 hours on battery life using light work. Install a low storage SSD drive and it will fly switching user accounts. Most of these used elitebooks still have about 1-2 years remaining on the warranty, 3 years standard. The warranty is a business class warranty and not the normal consumer grade warranty on other laptops. It means faster turn around in case you need warrant work. Consumer grade warranty takes several weeks to get anything done, this will take 1 week, from dropping it off on Monday to having it back by Friday, most likely by Thursday.

And yes I have the newer model 2560p with i7 2670qm cpu and ssd, with 6 cell battery and still get 4 hours on light work. And yes, they will survive a real train wreck. They are designed tough.

Thanks alot yotano :thumb: will check this out , thanks again for bringing an answer that not only helps but that also gives other oppurtunities when it comes down to buying for a reasonable price.

holy crap man, I checked out that chromebook and it has a ARM SoC processor. Those things are slow, its compared to a single core Intel Atom cpu. Some of the newer ARM processors are closer to a dual core Atom cpu. And everything has to be saved to the Google cloud system.

The next thing you have to ask yourself is the drivers. Does your printer have drivers for the Google OS or unless you write everything manually, which would suck.

I find these Chromebooks like a 11inch smartphone. I do everything what people comment on, on my smartphone. Write notes, check email, watch some movies, music, and I dont need to store everything on the Google cloud or lug around a 2 pound mini laptop. The bad thing is that my phone lasts 3-4 hours on a single battery, no problem, I pop out the dead one and install the new battery and restart phone, problem solved.

Univerzal 04-26-2013 06:58 AM

I think i go with the elitebook :thumb: i found it useful for more then stealth, and prices arent bad , chromebook is available with other processors but i didnt know about the cloud.

yotano211 04-26-2013 06:58 AM

If you need a cheaper laptop, try the 2530p, it the older model than the 2540p.

Most of them have run out of warranty but you can still find some with at least, say 6 months left.

Its not about the processor, its about the Google OS. You will need drivers for that different OS. If not, you are going to have major problems doing your stealth business.

You can also try netbooks, they are cheaper, lighter, and other stuff. I dont really know much about netbooks since I never had one or tried one out. But they they still run Mr softy's OS.

It really depends on your budget, I know your needs, I just dont know your budget.

golden_monkey 04-26-2013 09:37 PM

hey if hes smart enough he can buy gooooooogs hardware, open the box, slick it and install linux.

but if hes asking the question then he isn't.

the non-arm chromebooks are great for getting a hardware discount then just installing your favorite OS on it aka... anything other then chrome llololololoool

that is a perfect laptop. something basic for selling is more than enough. My laptop has a 12inch screen but I hook it up to a large screen when at home and take it with me when I need it. Small, light and more than fast enough to do almost anything. I bought my used for a little over 500.

If you haven't used Windows 8 yet I would suggest testing it out before purchasing anything with it. Lots of people including myself think it is a big headache. I would much rather use XP, Vista, 7. Anything but Windows 8 it is hugely different from traditional windows and people who aren't super savy with newer technology like smart phones, iPhones, etc it can become and issue.

I tried it once and could not get the hand of it. Its great for smart phones and tablets but not computers.
