people 'popping in'

UK term of 'pop over' and pop in'. People coming over to your house when it suits them, when they are bored, they happen to be passing. Hate it. If you want to see me make an appointment and I will decide if it suits me.

Got 2 of these muppets.

Due to doorway set-up they can see we are in only if lights are on in the evening, otherwise they have no way to know if I am around, they cannot get near my door, I can ignore them.

One is a local lady and her kid, and nowadays her kid is on a bike by itself calling for my kid, to come and play on the street with it. My kid does not play on the street, too young, not safe, no way. I let them in couple of times, was not convenient, big mistake, lady hung around had to offer coffee, nothing in common, kid is ok but only when there is an invitation and only occasional, these people expect your kid to be available whenever...!

Next one is new neighbour 25 years older than me, nothing in common, keeps saying I will pop over, and keeps telling me to pop over. I do not have the time or interest to entertain her. She has not come to the door yet, but she has phoned and left a message and I have not replied.

Even my best friends, people I have something in common with and are on my level, I would not want to see them at drop of hat, prefer organised outing, night out or invitation for coffee and not very often or it gets boring.

so how do I tell them politely, I can ignore calls to the house, but I see them in the street sometimes as I walk in the neighbourhood. Dreading if they start phoning, the neighbour has number, the kid does not. They know I am home alot, work from home. I told them I worked from home but they seem to equate that with being available.

May not win any friends, but I would say that your best course of action is to be firm with them. Explain that yes you work from home, but that does mean you actually have to work. Explain that your house is like your office, and ask if these people who pop into your office all the time?

I do not want to win them as friends, I just do not want to be rude. For me a neighbour is important if I really need them in an emergency or they need me and that is all.

The kid is at weekends alot though...just ignoring at the moment, irritating.

Even if they call, you let it go to voicemail

LOL

Since we moved from a cold weather northern USA state to Florida and have a 5 bdr, 3 bath home with a caged lanai and pool we all of a sudden have more family members then we though we had.

Some come for 3 days and stay a week.

Some come without a call or anything and their rental car is full of luggage.

Last family member to show up stayed for 10 days.

Many antique friends from up north just show up without a call and want to go to dinner, Disney etc.

Can drive you nuts Oompa.
