Hi, it depends on who are you dealing with, if it is a noob it is quite easy if it is a medium to expert user that WHANT to get your data then... quite difficult.

Best way is to lock the room... but even this could be violated.

Please be more specific.

What OS are you using, and who are you trying to lock it from?

A password on start up would do the trick if its just from kids ect, but it is possible to access the data fairly easily even with a OS password in place.

If its certain files you want locked, you can store them remotely.

There are also programs that will work alongside your windows OS (or any other OS) that also require a password in order to use the computer.

Want to keep it locked from everyone, place said computer in bank vault

Can you not make each Window user account password protected prior to logging into them? Is that what you're referring to?

There's not much info being provided here to understand what is really being asked

You're looking for a program called TrueCrypt, it encrypts your hard drive and requires a password to load the operating system or even access the hard drive at all.

Windows comes with BitLocker. It should be suitable for your needs. Do some research.

Truecrypt is the one to use.

Encrypt your whole drive with a password of at least 21 characters and no one can get in, even FBI. Google it and see.

I personally would not trust bitlocker or other similar programs as there may be a backdoor entry if authorities request.

Google around and you will see.

Truecrypt does not take up much room.

Have you installed the program?
If you already have then when you load up the program and under system menu, choose encrypt system drive and follow instructions.

It protects your pc by encrypting your whole hard drive so whenever you turn your pc on or come out of hibernation, you need to enter your password.

a whole browser in a file?

I think these data safes like truecrypt are more for files

I think you can do the browser thing via eg. firefox mobile, put it on a usb - handy for users of public computers, bring your browser with you.
