TMiles | 09-14-2008 06:28 PM | Darwin Award Living in Texas, I was very interested in the stories of the people who evacuated and those who did not. This morning on either CNN or the Today show, I heard the most amazing story of stupidity.
Three people decided to ride out the hurricane in a tent on a pier. Ike destroyed the entire pier other than the eight foot section they were on. (I guess luck and stupidity go hand in hand.)
The really funny part is at 1:00 AM Saturday morning, when the storm surge hit Galveston, they decided to call 911 and ask to be rescued. I guess they never heard the knocking on there door telling them a mandatory evacuation means no help is coming for those too stupid to leave.
About 13 to 14 hours later, a coastguard helicopter retrieved them.
I have two thoughts -
1. No wonder our taxes are so high. I wish the Coast Guard would have given them a $50,000 invoice.
2. Is it no wonder we deal with such idiots on Ebay, when people actually think it is OK to ride out a 20 foot storm surge on an exposed pier in the middle of the ocean.
Hope you all get a laugh out of this one!!!! |
