Mail fraud - Possible Internet Fraud??

I am a regular on this site and have learned a lot about how to get back on eBay and PAYPAL - but I am going to post a problem I am having that may or may not be related to eBay. This HAS started happening since I was suspended 3 weeks ago - but it may be a coincidence. Today I received, for the second time in 3 weeks, an 5X7 envelope that was full of trash from someone I don't know. I wasn't thinking and I opened the envelope so I cannot return it to the sender - if the return address is even valid. This envelope was sent with a Delivery Confirmation. I tracked the package and it was sent from a different zip Code. This is beginning to scare me. Obviously someone is trying to establish that they have delivered me something when all they sent me was trash. Should I close all my bank accounts and wait for someone to come after me for payments for something that I didn't order? Is anyone out there familiar with this scam? I do not have any orders outstanding. I realize that this isn't specifically about getting back on eBay and PAYPAL - but the members here are familiar with the way Internet sales work and I was wondering if anyone has come across a scam like this. I certainly will never open a package - or in this case an envelope that is addressed by someone I don't know. I called USPS and they were no help. Typical. What can I do to protect myself? Clearly, they have my name and address. This is the second envelope I have gotten full of trash. I feel like an idiot for opening it up. I do have a PAYPAL account that is still up and going - but there is no money in it.

Go through your past sales and find a sale you made to that city & state.
If you have any paypal disputes from this area.
It looks to me as though you have a buyer trying to establish that they returned their purchase to you by means of USPS Delivery Confirmation.
All a buyer needs is a valid DC number the USPS to win a Paypal dispute.

Mail/eBay/PAYPAL fraud??

Good ideas. I have already done that and it involved going through a couple hundred packing slips. I also called PAYPAL and they said that there were no disputes except the two I mention in the original message. I asked them to freeze/limit my account so that no one could add a purchase without my permission but they said that this would never happen on PAYPAL. Yeh, right. This really has me spooked and after reading this Forum, I now know that there are tons of ways to cover your identity on the Internet. Unfortunately, that loophole works both ways I suppose. I am going to close the last account tied to PAYAL and just use my new Business accounts. I don't even know if this is a PAYPAL type fraud. I have gone over my most recent charges from my primary bank account and nothing is showing up yet. BUT - I need to look back further. I will close that account as soon as I get the checks and CC for the new accounts that I opened up on Monday. In the meantime, I am keeping close tabs on this one last account that I have open. This is just really scary. Somebody is up to something.

What, exactly, do you mean by "trash"?
Have you paid for any of Modee's services?

viking23 10-02-2008 04:59 PM

Its from Modee,don't sweat it:)

Here We Go Again 10-02-2008 05:08 PM

Why would Modee be mailing people "trash"???

trg005 10-02-2008 05:25 PM

If you buy from Modee he sends you mail for google check out purposes.

Quasi_Mojo 10-02-2008 05:36 PM

I ask a couple questions and people jump to conclusions.
Wait for the answers from the OP, people.

trg005 10-02-2008 07:06 PM

I was not talking to you! Why should we have to wait for the OP to answer your questions before we can post? Others on this board might not mind you calling there questions stupid, etc. but you will not talk to me that way, sonny. This is a forum to post questions and learn. This is not your personal whipping board. When and why did everyone get so mean and start treating other forum members like dirt? Or the I know more than you attitude?

Where is EBHL? At least she has tact. She knows how to answer questions without putting people down.

aspkin 10-02-2008 07:41 PM

It's probably from Modee, he does this to cover is ass when you send a payment to him. He should have told you about this.

TGMT² 10-02-2008 08:15 PM

TRG005....Makes a Great point, I have been thinking the same thing for several weeks!

viking23 10-02-2008 08:38 PM

This guy is someone else in disguse,I think we all know who it is.
Its the one who has been handing out all the nasty comments all along.
He has tried to tone it down with the new name, but cant help himself:D
Any guesses?

Quasi_Mojo 10-02-2008 10:01 PM

The OP said he received trash. Now, trash, to me, is garbage. Garbage is stuff that can't be recycled.
Now, if he received old newspapers in the envelope, and he paid for Modee's services, I would've said that it was probably from Modee. He sometimes forgets to tell people that he sends an envelope - for Google checkout purposes, yes.
But we don't know this is the case. Because the OP hasn't verified.
Instead, people jumped to the conclusion that this was the case. I'm sorry that what I said sounded harsh, but, again, people jumped to conclusions. It was not meant to sound that way.
I really need to start using more emoticons.
;) ;) ;)

And no, I am not anybody else. Modee can verify that.

Jonas 10-02-2008 11:11 PM

If Modee needs to mail them something, he would mail them a 1oz envelope with delivery confirmation using a 1st class label and inside put a single paper explaining what it is, not garbage.

Modee claims to do all these impossible things that no one else in the world apparently has thought of meaning he must be a super-genius and thus would have likely thought of putting a note in there and why rather than being odd.

If it is Modee, I'd assume the ⊗⊗⊗⊗ return address is some kind of paranoia, and so he would not be too detailed, but even a small note with Modee on it would be all he needed.

philly387 10-02-2008 11:58 PM

Modee does claim to do a lot of things none of us are able to. He backs it all up too! He is an awesome guy!!!

GreenBean 10-03-2008 12:09 AM

The very first question to the OP should have been "What sort of trash" Unless the forum is told exactly what arrived, 2/3 of the replies do not quite work. What has mail fraud got to do with Buy Sell Trade?

Quasi_Mojo 10-03-2008 12:14 AM

That's why I asked that question, GreenBean. ;)

imjustme 10-03-2008 02:04 AM

Did you try selling the trash on eBay?

Brendaleigh 10-03-2008 07:18 AM

Mailing Trash

Sorry I didn't answer this faster but I was busy last night. Here is exactly what I got. I have received 2 - 5X7 envelopes and inside them were a wadded up piece of wrapper from an Office Max package of Bubble Wrap. I have bought a couple of Modee's services - well worth the money, but he never said anything about this. It does make sense though. I feel better thinking that this is what it could be. I Googled the address last night and all that came up was an 87 year old lady and a 107 year old lady. I would have had to pay for more details and I didn't want to do that. Hmmmmm.

Quasi_Mojo 10-03-2008 11:04 AM

It sounds like it's from Modee.
Please xxxx out the address in your posts and PM Modee and ask if it's from him.

Brendaleigh 10-06-2008 08:00 AM

Envelope full of trash .. . the end

I found out who sent the two envelopes full of trash and it had to do with a guide and some technical support that I paid for. I looked at the original message that I bought it from and it does state something about mailing an empty envelope. It was even in bold print. I thought that it was the standard disclaimer that I read on all this person's postings. Anyway, My bad. At least no one is after me.
