Activity: 0% Longevity: 90% | | broadband speed v's vpn ... strange
hi
maybe someone can throw some light on the following,
because of my location and line type i am only able to get around 5 meg broadband download speed,
i have contacted all the providers and they all say the same that because of the reasons above, 5 meg is all i can expect....
then how come,
when i connect through the VPN that i pay for my download speed is between 25 and 30 meg download speed, keeping in mind that of course it still has to come through my line etc how does that work, and the "normal" providers are not able to do it ? even if i pay more .... because they say its simply not possible,
strange .....
|
The complete step-by-step guide to get back to selling today!

While aspkin, 123, and others probably know more - if your own line is 5 meg speed max...and the VPN is saying 25-30...you are probably only getting 5 meg because your line would be the limiting factor

strange ..... | Just to clarify, you are saying you are paying for downloads for between 25 -30meg AND get that speed on download.
What happens when you run a Speed Test? |

It does seem very strange.
Download speeds (at least where I live) are limited due to the components that make up the line and the distance from the exchange and the type of exchange you have (if it has been upgraded and what now)
As Rsot says your VPN may be able to download at 25mb/s but that does not mean that you will be able to on your laptop/desktop

We were allowed to cancel a contract with 3 (in the UK) for this very reason. |

i do understand about false promises to make you sign up but,
as my post says..
"when i connect through the vpn that i pay for my download speed is between 25 and 30 meg download speed"
thats not what they promise etc, it is what i get, tested with 3 different speed tests on 4 different computers/tablets.
and yes as i said it has to come through the same system/exchange/line etc but it is what i get,
like i said very strange,
maybe the "normal" providers are not able to offer higher speed as they cannot offer it to all because of their system limitations and rather than give it to some and risk the back lash they give it to no one, so maybe its not my line but their equipment that causes the limit

I can't remember because it was a long time ago, but I think something like this happened to me, but when you actually download it is bottle necked by your own connection. Tell me if that's not the case. I was told for years I cannot get a fast connection, which was a pain in the arse because back then I was into gaming and had a very good PC, but piss poor internet.
Try downloading a file and seeing how fast it goes. What you're getting on speed test should be around 8 times higher than your download(8 bits in a byte). Hopefully you can get nice internet soon, most of England is covered now I think and I can get 100mb+ if I wanted, but only pay for 38, and actually get 38. Five years ago I could only get 2mb, though :'(

The lucky ones can get 80-100mbps. A very, very few can get Google Fiber, with speeds up to 1gbps. And, the prices we pay are ridiculous as well. A 6-10mbps connection costs about $40 per month, and 80-100mbps usually costs over $100. The cable companies saw what happened to the phone companies and are not about to upgrade their networks so that people can drop their cable service.
Worse, many providers now want to limit your transfers to as low as 5gb per month and make you pay more for each extra byte you use. America may no longer lead the world in science, ingenuity and new ideas, but we DEFINITELY RULE THE PLANET when it comes to GREED!

We were classed in the third band of countries like a third world country. We had countries like Estonia with populations of 1 million who had 20MB+ when parts of England couldn't even get broadband. Thankfully now it's perfect.
What i'm glad for is that here nearly all packages are unlimited. In CA and US you get charged a fortune. I never get capped or have speed decreases either. I hated the internet here 5 years ago, now I love it and my area has some of the best.
For me 38mb down 8 up is £15. I'm guessing 76mb down (next package up) is around £25-30. I get 38MB down always at all times.

| Not all of the UK is covered yet.
Still waiting for it in my area, I am stuck with 0.4mb/s at the very fastest. Plenty enough speed for stealth but far from ideal for anything else. One of the downsides that come with living in the middle of nowhere.

I know all of the UK isn't covered, that's why I said England. I'm not sure of all the areas, but I know the south east and north are okay. I think the south west isn't covered properly yet, though. Hopefully the rest is covered soon. I know how you feel right now. I could could go spend £1000 on a PC and everything can be fast, but then my internet is terrible. I would have happily paid £100 for even 10mb.
