It is truly a beauty.. Like the other big auctions on ebay, you must be pre-approved to bid, etc.

But I find it interesting to look at something like this, as it is history.

Auction is up to $1.750 Million with 7.5 days to go.

Wait and watch his paypal account get frozen / banned / lose funds :pound::pound::pound:

Anyone want to guess where the bidding will end? I honestly have no idea, but will guess around $5.8million

I sold several very high value comic books in the past.
Pretty much every time I did so i insisted on meeting the buyer face to face and receiving payment in person.
Can never be too safe.
And with an item like this Im sure it will be the same way. if youre able to spend the millions to buy a comic book you should be able to spend a thousand to fly over to pick it up in person and make payment by bank transfer.

This may not be done face to face, but my guess is the money will be transferred by bank wire and the shipping will be by a special courier service and insured for a huge amount of money.

I have also sold a lot of comics in the past - nothing this high value but the niche market is nice...these one of a kind items are beautiful

I can remember when Action Comics #1 was selling for $15,000 - $20,000 although I never saw a copy listed in this condition. And that was like 30 years ago...

I never would have bought it back then, even if I had the money (which I didn't).

First, because I would be totally paranoid hat something might happen to it in my possession and it would become worthless. This may seem silly, but you never know.

Second, nobody back then would have believed it would sever sell for $1,750,000.00, unless maybe a loaf of bread cost $250 and a gallon of gas was $1,000.

Third, I would have rationalized that there were better things to invest in. I would have been wrong, of course, but I didn't have a crystal ball. I still don't.

The reason this one is so valuable is:

• The Condition - it is the best known copy in existence.
• Scarcity - Nobody collected comics back then, most were thrown away or recycled in the paper drives that were so common in that era.
• Popularity - Superman is a very popular character. If this were the first comic featuring Donald Duck, it would not be worth nearly as much.

I read where one person bought 100 copies of the Harry Potter box set of DVD's, to put away for resale in the future, on the theory that it would increase in value dramatically when they stopped printing more of them. I very much doubt that person will ever see a profit - these DVD's were made by the millions, so it is hard to imagine they will ever be scarce.

Markets for things like Beanie Babies tank all the time, since they are not actually rare. Most "collectors editions" of comics that came out in the 1970's and 1980's are worth very little today.

If you want to collect stuff that will be valuable in the future, you should save what everyone else is throwing out. Look at the market for rare toys - the price for a toy can double if you have the original box - because even if people saved their old "Six Million Dollar Man" doll, they probably threw the box away.

In Chicago, there was an amusement park called RiverView, which closed down in 1967. Everybody and their brother started saving stuff related to the park when they announced it was closing. Today, most of the stuff from RiverView is only worth a few dollars, since there isn't much scarcity and also since it only has appeal to a limited audience. I cannot help but wonder how many people saved old ticket stubs from Disneyland or Disney World thinking they might increase in value (although they MIGHT, at least more-so than stuff from the souvenir shop, since the tickets were made to be USED, not collected).
