Filevault taking too long..

I'm running Yosemite on my 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5 iMac.

I've decided to encrypt the hard drive which is 1TB (of which i'm using 30GB)

I've begun the filevault process however the time remaining is fluctuating between 16-22 hours. This can't be right?!

Will I just have to sit it out?

Also can I change user accounts/shut down the computer and will the encryption continue where it left off?

These sort of things take time... Just need a bit of patients.

Damn. Wish I'd started the process at the end of the day. Just had a chat with Apple and they've said the same thing.
