bought a mifi but cant figure out how to connect it.
 

i bought a mifi today because att is too slow for me. i was told it is compatible with windows xp which i currently use.

so i read instructions and it says to open wireless network connection tab. yet my xp doesnt have one. i am not sure how to hook it up. looking for any advice/ solutions from forum members.

a mifi is wireless. there is no need for a hardwired connection. just charge it like you would a phone and turn it on.

once on, there should be instructions in the box with login, password and SSID so that you can jump into the control panel and make changes like a normal home router

i followed the instructions. my xp doesnt have a wireless setup anywhere. theres wireless setup wizard but i dont get anything from completing it.

do you have a builtin wifi antenna or have you ever installed one?

if not, then you will need to run the mifi via USB cable, which is also very easy to do.

who uses XP nowadays unless you are using VMs...

Does the PC you're using have wireless capability? If so then have you installed the drivers for it?

ok so i upgraded to windows 7 and got an antenna installed.

only to find out i cant change ip addresses with my ellipsis jetpack.

i went back to verizon and discussed it with the employee. he told me you can only change the ip address on a jetpack by calling their resident director something. and it costs $500.

so im out of patience because i specificcaly explained i was buying a jetpack because its quicker to change ip addresses than with at&t.

im told that there is no way to change ip addresses. so i asked for a refund only to be hit with a $35 restock fee! lol really? i also asked before buying if there were hidden fees and i was told there isn't.
i did manage to get the restock fee waived.

i tried explaining that i used my parents mifi and changed their ip address in as much time as it took to turn device off and back on.

im done with verizon.

i just wanted 2 things. larger ip address pool and quicker way to change between them.

unfortunately verizon is the worst at providing just that.

That's strange that your verizon wireless Mifi has a static IP, something doesn't seem right.

If it's verizon wireless than it should be the same as data on a cell phone and the IP is dynamic

another employee mentioned that all jetpacks have a dynamic ip rather than static.

i thought dynamic=many ips available while static=not able to change ip. guess i had it backwards.

Yes verizon should have a dynamic IP which means it changes, but for some reason yours is static

the employee gave no explanation why but they did say it was static.

Ellipsis Jetpack MHS800L is the newest one and has been out for a while. I assume it is that one.

Was going to try it on prepaid as VZW mifi's LTE SIM port is unlocked and can handle multiple networks.

thats probaby the one. they had 2 jetpacks and i went for the cheaper one. all i know is thats its an ellipsis.

When a service has a "dynamic IP" that doesn't mean it is necessarily easy to change. It just means that the company can't guarantee that your IP address won't change. When you have a service with a "static IP" it means your IP address MUST stay the same. Companies do not market their products to assist people playing stealth.
