I've never been a huge Portillo's fan. Their food is not bad, but it is not great either. HOWEVER: Some of them have a Barnelli's inside also. They have AWESOME ribs and their chopped salad with their house dressing is possibly the best salad I've ever had.

As for Portillo's, their hot dogs ARE very good, but their burgers and fries are just average.

In Florida we have Hot Dog Tree with the signature "Slaw Dog" OHHH yes ladies and gents a hot dog with a layer of chili and onions covered in coleslaw.....yummers!!

If you are ever in Chicago, and you want the BEST hot dogs and hamburgers on the PLANET, go to the Wiener Circle. Their Char Cheddar Cheese Dogs are spectacular. Their Cheese Fries are yummy and world-famous. They use Merkt's cheddar, not the cheap crappy cheese from a huge can that most places use. It's a little dive, their customer area is no bigger than my bedroom - but they ALWAYS have a line going and GOOD LUCK parking in their lot! They are also open late since they are a favorite of the people coming out of the bars...

I'm not a big ice cream eater, but my favorites are a small vanilla cone at Dairy Queen or Rocky Road from Baskin-Robbins. In a pinch I'll eat Edy's Grand Rocky Road.

I forgot... There IS one other type of Ice Cream that comes to mind... Ben & Jerry's Cookie Dough ice cream. I've had to avoid it though. Every time I pick up a container, I end up eating the whole damn thing!

The best ever ice cream, Hokey Pokey (NZ type)

Home Made Hokey Pokey Ice Cream

For the hokey pokey:
4 Tbsp sugar
2 Tbsp golden syrup
1 tsp baking soda

For the ice cream:
4 egg yolks
1 cup caster sugar
500ml cream (35-38 per cent fat) <----clogged arteries here we go!

1. Make the hokey pokey first. Line a flat baking tray with non-stick baking paper. Place sugar and golden syrup in a large pot over a low heat and stir constantly until the mixture comes to the boil. (A pot with a wide base will help prevent the liquid bubbling up over the edge.)

2. Simmer for five minutes over a very gentle heat, stirring occasionally to make sure it doesn't burn. Remove the pot from the heat and add the baking soda, quickly stirring until the mixture froths. Immediately pour the mixture onto the lined tray and cool. Once the hokey pokey has cooled, break into rough chunks.

3. For the ice cream, beat sugar and egg yolks in a bowl with an electric mixer until pale and creamy.

4. In another bowl, whip cream until soft peaks form. Gently fold sugar and egg yolk mix into the cream then stir through chunks of hokey pokey. Pour into a two-litre plastic container with a tight fitting lid and freeze overnight or until firm.
