Re: Dont buy too many prepaid phones

ABC 17 News reported on Wednesday that 100 prepaid cell phones were purchased at two Missouri Walmarts over the weekend, and employees reported the incidents to authorities.

The Columbia Police Department was notified on Monday of a suspicious purchase at the Walmart on Conley Road. According to the police report, several men bought dozens of phones around 9:30 Friday night.

ABC 17 New talked to a witness who didn't want to be identified said the men paid with cash.

"Right then and there I knew there was not something adding up about this. It's not right, it doesn't make any sense," he said. "Who's going to order 50 phones for Christmas? Who does that?"

"I think on the surface that is suspicious," said Paul Fennewald, the former Missouri Homeland Security Coordinator. "If I had seen the same thing, I probably would have called somebody also."

A similar situation also happened hours later at a Walmart in Lebanon, Mo. Police said two men bought about 60 phones. They were taken into custody, but later released because police said they had no legal reason to detain them.

-----------

Loser story - both the people buying that amount of phones (and not expecting to be questioned) and the police who even bothered to detain them knowing that there is no legal reason.

Tell them you just want to resell them on ebay. And show them one or two of your accounts for proof.

But if you look middle eastern, I would paint my face a little whiter, haha.

Too bad Michael Jackson has passed. You could have asked him for some of that skin whitener.

Re: Dont buy too many prepaid phones

For all we know, these guys just found a quick way to flip the phones for profit. Perhaps a loophole no one knows about yet.

Secondly, anyone in here could go to a Chinese wholesale website, find a random electronics seller and buy a few thousand cheap phones. But, because these guys bought it in a store, they are crim.in.als. Do they really think terr.ori.sts only know how to source their comms devices from your local neighborhood Wal-Mart?

The feds figure terrorists will go somewhere where they can pay cash. Paying cash was the suspicious part here.

Re: Dont buy too many prepaid phones

There's a whole lot of Wal-Mart customers who only use cash. Mainly because they don't have credit cards and/or enough money to even have a decent checking or savings account. That's just their typical low-income client base. They should be used to seeing cash. I've been in retail as well and dealt with low-income customers who always used cash, even when the price or money owed was a larger amount. Using cash to buy lots of things is not a cri.me. If it is, we need to remove it from the economy and stop whining about it.

How is it any different than these guys splitting up into different stores with different friends and buying the same amount of phones? Still cash, still same amount of phones and still same amount of money. Maybe it's their fault for not thinking this would draw attention to them, but the point still stands. And like I mentioned previously, what if there is no nefarious intent here? Maybe they honestly thought this was not a big deal. It is the news and police that color them crim.in.als and no one else. Totaled with typical fear mongering just as they do with terr.ori.sm and privacy in this country. Every argument they use involves lies of mass terr.ori.st threats and violence against children. That's all they know how to do.

Until something is proven otherwise, all you have is a handful of people buying lots of crap. And, since it's the holidays, we can now assume that anyone buying large amounts of gifts in cash for friends and family is a potential crim.in.al.

Precisely - just publicity; news for the sake of news

Re: Dont buy too many prepaid phones

the more logical explanation is that they own corner stores/convenience stores or cell phone stores and sell the phones there.

Re: Dont buy too many prepaid phones

I knew I should not have hired those Muslims to go around to all the wal-marts and buy out all the cell phones
