Nigerian Scam artists

So I've had several types of people try to scam me in all sorts of ways on ebay craigslist and random emails. I never answer them.

I had a friend recently lose his car a few months back (well like 6-8) to a scam like this. Not just the car but the value of the car. He never got the car back and apparently there were ways to dispute the money issue with the banks involved but he was to lazy or not mentally capable of doing it. So he took a credit hit as he hasn't paid anything yet and he withdrew the funds and spent it before the check bounced or the nigerian fraud was discovered or however it happens.

Obviously they close the negative balance account no more than a month after being negative. But if this happens to anyone else can they work with the bank to agree to pay payments or installments over a few months or more to avoid credit hits and the thing in the system that stops you from opening other bank accounts?

Yes, it can be possible to deal with banks when this happens.

The USA is one country that actually has very vigorous program at State and Federal levels to deal with these issues.

Matters are a case by case basis, of course.

let the OP decide whether it is nosey or not....

given the OP mentioned it, good chance they would answer a straightforward question.

most of these guys are really obvious to spot, so it would be interesting to know how this car got procured.....

the bogus check thing happens every day, but to physically pick up the car? these people are working in different countries so how or why would they actually come get the car?

or did he lose it to a bank because he couldnt pay the bill?

I take no action on checks until they clear these days - for this kind of reason. I also specifically tell my bank, please verify this and they are happy to do so.

FIrst question, how the heck do I get email notifications when I start or comment in a thread?

Second, I've just had all kinds of nigerian scams try and get me before. The car thing was a variation but not from a nigerian in another country of course. I honestly don't know the exact details as I was literally walking in a parking lot when I heard this guy telling one of his friends the story. I didn't ask. (I live in small town, easy to over hear conversations from people you know which is easily everyone). I'm pretty sure it was just a bounced check ordeal or whatever. like the check shows as available or cleared but then later comes back as fraud and then you owe all the money back. if you sent money to nigerian for their service or signed over title or title-less car (where I live, this happens often) to a guy you didn't really know, then you're screwed.

I have accepted cashiers checks but I tell the buyer if we can go directly to the guy's bank to verify if the check is good. Only 1 buyer said "no" and I didnt do the sale. I knew that guy was fishy when he asked me "what do I do for a living". No buyer has ever asked me that.

But I always prefer to get cash 1st and only. Cash is still King.
