Has anyone had to change the business name for an EIN?
 

I'll be running this by my tax guy as soon as I get a chance (or I might just call the IRS), but I figured it's worth asking here since many members own LLC's. Here's what has happened:

I got the EIN about 6 months ago. I filed articles of incorporation for the business over the weekend, using the info I used to create the EIN. Today the articles of incorporation were rejected because there is already a company in my state with the name I chose. I added another word to the company name and resubmitted my articles of incorporation, and they should be accepted tomorrow.

But now the company name registered with my state does not match the company name on file with the IRS. Anyone know how to amend an EIN application?

Last year I had the same problem, but the other way around. I'd given the wrong business name on my articles of incorporation, and was able to simply file amended articles of incorporation with the correct business name. I don't know how to go about doing this with the IRS though.

I know it's a long shot, but I'm all ears if anyone can offer any advice!

Last year, we filed a name change for one of our businesses in WA State.

We simply sent a letter to the IRS explaining the reasons... Which by fate were similar to yours.

Even to save your phone the IRS, they explain on their site what to do. They break up the information quite clearly...

I managed the name change by following the above...should not be an issue for you.
