Post evaluation system

1) It would be nice add something like a "points & ratings" system to all threads and replies. For example, if someone posts a nice thread, users may put "+" to it, thus increasing thread & OP rating. Same with particular replies, that can be "liked" and "disliked". And if a post / reply gets too many "-", it gets hidden from the threads list.

2) OP can choose the "best" reply for the thread, giving the author some additional scores.

Basically you think you've just cracked the code there and invented Reddit?

Not at all. But all big sites have such system, so if someone posts garbage, his post quickly gets removed my the community, and nice posts rocket to the top. Very nice system.

Re: Post evaluation system

I have mixed feelings. I'd hate to see people discouraged from posting, but at the same time, Muzzie has a point.

I mean, there is already a system in place to report inappropriate posts, such as political diatribes, hate speech, SPAM about how they make $500 per hour, and the like.

But there ARE some people here who seem to post for the sake of posting and add very little to the conversation, even though what they are posting does not fall into the politics/hate speech/SPAM category. I'm not talking about the occasional joke posts and funny pictures, that just keeps everything fun. And I think there is a law in the US that states funny cat pics must be at least 5% of the content of any website. :-)

But I would hate to see someone with an idea, especially a newbie, afraid to post because they think they will be ridiculed. We have enough flame wars on the forums regarding stealth issues as it is. You never know where the next great idea is going to come from and we don't want to snuff that out.

That would be cool actually.

A forum based on reddit's voting system.

I don't know how feasible it is though.. I'll look into it.

That'll bring about a lot of motivation to posters like me, I'll be very excited if it gets implemented. :d

Hmmm....it's interesting. I agree with the like, dislike, vote up, etc. But the hiding threads would be abused....a LOT.

I won't go into detail, but I think everyone can think of useful info someone posted once or twice that was met with vitriol. Too easy for a group with vested interests to get together and delete threads that they don't like.

I do really like the voting up threads idea though. Stickies are great, but there are a great many threads that are full of excellent and useful info that aren't stickied.

As an alternative, perhaps add a "search for liked posts, most liked first, top to bottom". This would be a slight modification to what you can already do, search for liked posts, but if you search for posts with the most to least likes in order, MUCH more useful.
