What do you think of New Layout?

So I just about finished the new layout.

There is now a navigation Menu and a new forum home.

http://www.aspkin.com/forums/home.php

You'll see recent threads on this page.

I also did some postbit tweaks which I'm still working on.

The main reason for the change is the 'recent threads' on the home page.

I find it's easier to keep on eye on new thread posts, etc.

Let me know what you think.

Here We Go Again 01-07-2009 03:30 PM

Did you notice that the Location part is missing from the user information on the thread screens.
The only way to tell where someone lives is from their flag.
Now people will be forced to load each members public profile to see what country the flag is from.

Personally I do not know my flags of the world.
Let alone the 2 letters the system places on the flag to tell the country.

If you look to the right where the info is now you will NOT see the words "Location:"
It has been removed.
Can it be put back?
This is how we know where people are from.
And about that little info area....
On this post for my information my shows my "Join Date"
But the info for Modee and Aspkin does not show the "Join Date"
What is up with that???
And the blue box that contains this post is smaller that the 2 posts above me?????

Another weird thing I saw last night....
When someone places a picture in their thread that is larger than my screen the system does not shrink the picture.
But instead it makes the entire web page content 3 feet wide.
You have to scroll sideways to read the messages.

Yesterday in this thread:
http://www.aspkin.com/forums/want-se...b-2nd-gen.html
On this post:
http://www.aspkin.com/forums/want-se...html#post71616
The OP posted a HUGE picture. For some reason it is now gone.

ALSO...
The link attached to the graphic in the upper left hand corner is now linked to a recent post page and not the Forum Main page as it was.
Is this on purpose?

The new layout is pretty nice.
It will take a little while to get used to it for sure.

aspkin 01-07-2009 03:39 PM

Right it will take a little time to get used to but I think it's worth it.

As for the location I removed it because I feel the flags are sufficient and I'm trying to keep the clutter down in that area to not let it expand too much.

About the image someone posted, I think it was just the image size.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...Ipodtouch1.jpg

It didn't look too big to me. If could just be that post.

And I removed the join date... I was just testing a few things.

There are not many flags to keep track of. Just the main ones really, the US, CA, UK, AU and maybe a couple more.

Thanks for your comments, it does help.

aspkin 01-07-2009 03:41 PM

Ah, and the link change for the logo was on purpose. :)

It'll take a little time to get used to.

Here We Go Again 01-07-2009 03:46 PM

Is it possible to MAKE people select their flag when joining?
Or even grab their IP when they join and automatically post the CORRECT flag for their location?
People do and will post incorrect flag because they think it is cool.
Then we are giving US advice to someone located in Albania or Bulgaria.

aspkin 01-07-2009 03:52 PM

Lol, yes I did make it a requirement for newly registered members.

It's the reason why you see more new people with flags already on.

And I wish there was an easy way to cross reference a persons IP to match up a country flag like we have here: http://www.aspkin.com/forums/online.php

But there isn't.

I think it's okay for now.

OMG! THANK YOU!

I thought I was going to have to shoot myself if I had to read another post that said...

Please add flag, Please add location, etc etc etc etc...there must be 100's of those by now!

GreenBean 01-07-2009 05:21 PM

?Tuvalu. Doubt they know ebay. Been there when it was called the Ellis Islands. Big hefty
guys that play a mean game of football. Gridiron suits them well.LOL

Improvements are good. Still think IQ tests will help. have to learn to navigate the site.

ebaykilla 01-07-2009 05:45 PM

HAHA! I have to 100% agree on this one...Every thread I saw had this somewhere in it.

John14789 01-07-2009 08:52 PM

To tell you the truth I liked how it was before. Also I'm not likin the narrow message board.

aspkin 01-07-2009 09:38 PM

John what's your screen resolution?

Here We Go Again 01-07-2009 11:40 PM

I sorta agree with John14789
Is it possible to place the new Navigation Bar horizontal across the top somehow?

It does not matter how wide I make my browser the message boards lose about 2 inches.
There is a 2 inch bar to the left of all the threads now.

aspkin 01-07-2009 11:44 PM

Ah, yes that's the down fall of having a sidebar. :)

The only thing that can be done is making it a dark background to take away the bright white that could be annoying..

What is your screen res HWGA?

I have mine at 1440 x 900

aking 01-07-2009 11:50 PM

LoL, I didnt even notice it until i came in here. Nice tho

philly387 01-07-2009 11:54 PM

I have mine at 1280x1024 at it looks great to me.

Here We Go Again 01-08-2009 12:32 AM

I am running 1680 X 1050

aspkin 01-08-2009 12:50 AM

There's going to be a gap in the left side for the sidebar.. but it shouldn't be a problem.

It looks fine to me.

John14789 01-08-2009 04:00 PM

This is my screen resolution: 1280 X 800.

aspkin 01-08-2009 04:26 PM

I lowered my res to 1280x720 and it doesn't look bad.

Try upping your resolution a little John.

John14789 01-08-2009 09:03 PM

Doesn't really do nothing but I guess the new layout is something you just have to get used to.

TGMT² 01-09-2009 01:47 AM

I did to at 1st...

Now I just go to the Navigation Menu and click "Main Forums" which used to be the home page.

Jonas 01-09-2009 02:07 AM

Cannot unsee!

Here We Go Again 01-09-2009 04:27 PM

I opinion is that you really need to add the Location back to the basic ever present information on every post.

Here is a example:
User Name: magnificent.time
His flag says .BG
What country is that?---I don't know.
I have to go to hip user profile page then click on his About Ma Page.
Then I can see that he is from Bulgaria.

The Flags are cute and all but you need the basic "Location:" back on every post.

Regular Windows users can "right click" the flag and click "properties" and it will display the name of the country.

GreenBean 01-09-2009 05:37 PM

Modee, that really only works to a degree. If the user does not know forum speak, they can get a topic started that has existing threads.

aspkin knows by now I grumble about change in some things. However I do appreciate the efforts being made to improve everything. I really really like the fact that a post is much neater & does not have broken lines. Not fully happy about the new layout but I know it is at the tweaking stage at present.;)

aspkin 01-09-2009 06:03 PM

For people who come to the forums every once in awhile, the home feature is great for them. It makes it easy to check on recent thread posts and reply or whatever easily instead of going to the main forums and looking up different threads that way.

For people who are on the forums daily and are used to and have no problem navigating the main forums, you may find home unnecessary.

http://www.aspkin.com/forums/home.php

But I have noticed more users on the forum now, more threads being created and more posts from members. About a 30% to 40% increase. Which is pretty awesome I think.

It needs more tweaking, but I think it's a good change.

John14789 01-09-2009 11:00 PM

The layout looks ok on my laptop but on the iphone YUK! I don't like the layout of the forum on the iphone.

I do not run a Windows Platform.
I run a Mac platform and I am not the only one... I know Modee does also.

I need to wrap the forums to prevent this from happening.

I noticed it too. :)

Jonas 01-16-2009 06:46 AM

Where have moods gone?

John14789 01-16-2009 12:39 PM

You know what the layout is starting to look alright. I guess you just have to get used to it.

aspkin 01-16-2009 03:48 PM

Hah!

It needs a bit more work, but yeah I think it'll do alright.

I'm pretty busy right now with other things, but I'll get back to it when I can.

I think we've out grown the moods. :)

TGMT² 01-16-2009 03:57 PM

What I liked that you 1st did after the Mods, was when you clicked the BIG "Ebay Suspensions Forum" icon in the upper left hand corner it took you to "Recent Threads".

But I see you now you have changed that to take you to "Main Forums".

I liked it BEST when that link took you to "Recent Threads".

aspkin 01-16-2009 04:22 PM

You did? I kind of did too.

I'll change it back.

GreenBean 01-16-2009 06:40 PM

One of the parts I most dislike is that all threads are not the same width. This thread is wide & good to read. Other threads are not like this one. (stunted;))

Hmmmmmmmm...They both look the same on my computer?

GreenBean 01-16-2009 06:52 PM

Not on mine. Might go kick it. All layout has shrunk now. Where has the latest posts list gone?
Great. Bah humbug
