Help quick, scammer scamming me and have quesion about Amazon

A buyer purchased an item totalling $18 from me 3 wks ago on Amazon

This morning he sent me a message, here is is

I want to inquire about your refund policy, want to return the item

He has about the same amount of feedback as I do but one is disturbing, it is red and indicates he redded a buyer who did everything right. He normally just buys, but has a few items up for sale at the moment.

I replied telling him sic "Sure, no problem. Send the item back and I will refund you. Amazon has a policy of 3 refunds per lifetime so since this is such a small item, it appears best I mail you the refund directly so you can keep your 3 lifetime refunds.

I KNOW he is about to come back to tell me he wants to keep the item and he wants a refund. I even sent it priority mail out the same day, though he ordered standard (I always send it quicker than they expect) and of course, he left me no feedback. I cannot in good conscious refund him without the item in my hands, I feel like I would be helping him scam someone, and even though it is me, it is still wrong.

So....my question is, can a buyer purchase two items from you to ruin your feedback? I am going to probably need to go on vacation for a while just in case to prevent him from doing that. And I think I will insist he use the A-Z Guarantee. What just registered is I bet he has used up all his 3 lifetime refunds so wants me to mail it to him and wants to keep the item, just guessing.
I will go look for my answer but hoped someone had the answer quicker.

Thanks for reading thru all this, hope it made sense

No offence, but I dont see how a buyer requesting to return an item is a scam. He might have a legitimate reason to want to return the item for money back.

Also, I dont understand why you think he is going to say he wants a refund of money and keep the item when according to you he said:
"I want to inquire about your refund policy, want to return the item"
That sure sounds to me like he wants the return the item back to you.

Your post makes no sense to me.

It appears you were correct
He probably hoped I would let him keep the item because I haven't heard from him after saying no problem I will refund you upon sending the item back.
