Own Website

I have created a nice little website for my items but am struggling to get visibility. I am using Google Webmaster Tools but am getting nowhere...

Any others got tips to get up the search listings?

Thanks

Do some reading on SEO (search engine Optimization), or hire someone to SEO your site for you. You need to get organic backlinks which takes some time to get. Try running some google adwords campaigns. Google search SEO

yes, SEO is what you need to have. Everything SEO.

If you using zen cart or oscommerce, You can find mods/add ons on the supported web site.

Good luck!

Thanks - is a simple off the page job but easy to maintain.

If interested I used the online builder from jimdo.com

Try Adwords for some of your main items.. target buying keywords. Keywords someone would type into Google when they're READY to buy your items. Don't target broad terms.

Work on your on page SEO, add more content to your site (unique content) and work on creating links back to your site with anchor text you want to rank for in Google.

Use Adwords to get you sales today, use SEO for the long run.

Good luck

Aspkin has written a book about running your own website. I'm interested in getting it myself.

I made my own website with the intent of being an artsy fartsy creative type to have a place to show my junk. I created a subdirectory for that, one to keep ePay photos and a few others for my other interests. Some of the subdirectories link from the main page and some don't. Under the artsy part of the site I made pages for this area of interest. As a subscriber to another discussion site for this interest they have forums. By posting to these forums and linking back to a photo to illustrate my point, show a piece of equipment in use or just show an example of my work it seems to cause some kind of hints or something to cause me to get listed at the top of most search engines when someone searches for my artsy fartsy name (I'm not the only one so others show up) or the name of a piece of equipment I use (by typing the name of it my page for it shows up as a site for more info). Check the help section of your webspace provider for information on "robot exclusion". I forget what it is but I think if you allow robots they browse your site and report back to search engines what might be found there. There's another thing that I think is nifty but may not help with ranking called "fav icon". If you do a search on the web you'll find links on how to make one for free and use it on your site. You pick the image of yours and they turn in into a small image file that you put on your site and include a line in your page html that causes the little Internet Explorer or Firefox logo on the tab of a page and into the address field to show your logo instead.

I think finding a discussion group in your field of interest is the best thing though. I guess it depends on what your site is and where you might put your links. You don't want to look like a spammer or anything but if your discussing widgets with other sellers and you sell widgets a link to a photo on your site on a posting where you want to show an example of "how i package my widgets for shipping" is just being helpful to other readers but also helps your page by getting hits everytime someone reads that post.

I never paid any company to put me at the top of a search engine but by having info on certain items my page shows up when people search for those items. Maybe it's just dumb luck but it worked.
