Making a E-commerce website

Just wondering if anyone has ever setup an E-commerce website and if they have had any luck with it (eg sales etc). Just wondering as im in the process of making on for my uncle, so just wanted to know how successful people have been with ones they made themselves rather than having the professionally designed. Thanks
