Domain name registration and hosting

Hi all,

I'm a newbie in this... I've decided on try out a particular hosting service but they charge exorbitant domain name registration fees. Can I register the domain name with another service (at a cheaper cost), and then transfer it to the hosting service of my choice (at no extra charge, apparently)? What are the pros and cons of doing this?

Thank you for any help...

I have used godaddy.com in the past.
Their rates were pretty good.

I use a combo of GoDaddy and Hostgator for a bulk of my websites, they're prefect.

No offense but Godaddy sucks as a registrar, they do a lot of dirty stuff when it comes to lapsed domains.

They will also pull your registration at the slightest complaint with NO notice.

If you forsee getting any complaints at ALL stay away from Godaddy

GoDaddy's terms of service say the company "reserves the right to terminate your access to the services at any time, without notice, for any reason whatsoever."

4chan.org, one of the top 15 most popular sites on the internet was originally hosted at godaddy with the domain 4chan.net. GoDaddy stole the domain very early on from the site owner, I think even before the website was up. The site owner could never get it back and godaddy then transferred it to a cybersquatter/domain scalper who put a no-content spam doorway page on it ever since.
