Is 1and1.com - Professional solutions for Website, Domain, Hosting a reliable domain registrar?
They say it only costs $0.99 to register a .com domain, which is like 10 or 20% the price of what other registrars ask...

Why should I or should I not use 1and1? Are they scammers?

That's the first year price, after which it goes to the normal pricing of $10 or so, 1&1 is fine, there is also namecheap.com which I recommend.

You can also try moniker, I used to use them.

I use Moniker. Roughly under around $10 for a full year, but well worth it because of the full-control offered.

Exactly what aspkin said except its like $14 after the year, not $10. Sales tactics. I admit, I fell for it and ended up transferring all my domains elsewhere before the year would end. Worked out in the end.

I have used namecheap.com upon bigboss' recommendations - been smooth

Personally I like namecheap, their two-factor authentication really gives my peace of mind

I agree with NameCheap and the two-factor authentication.. I use it and find it works well for beefed up security.

I also use NameCheap these days, although I do still have a few names registered at GoDaddy.

There was, at one time, a cheap registrar that charged $3 per year per domain name. But they went belly-up and left site owners with no way to change anything for months.

I would avoid any such registrars. Cheap can be costly!

1and1.com one worst their is. I had few sites buy from others be with them and it is a nightmare to do anything. Their is a reason they very cheap. Both times site down a week to month as they refused to update nameservers and they took forever transferring to namecheap. They make you pay to do internal transfer. If want to be nicked and dime they be one for you.
