It depends. On what your goals are.

If you have zero chance of getting to #1 for your term, one tactic is to create a wikipedia page for that term (of course linking to your site as an external reference) and then throw a few links at that page. It will take your competitors #1 ranking away in no time. Google LOVES wikipedia.

The problem is that Wikipedia links are no follow and no good for seo. But for traffic, that depends.

If you can get them to give you an interwiki link, you get endless pagerank.
