What type of clothing pics look better?

Hey everyone! I am back after a ton of work on my site (the one mentioned in my thread "Finally got my online store up"), hah.

In those reviews, many of you said that I really need to get a decent camera for the clothing pictures. I have finally decided on the camera I am going to purchase (Canon Rebel XS, fyi) so over time I will have to redo some photos.

My question is... what type of clothing photo looks better?

OR

MINUS the image quality and size (because once I redo the photos with the new camera they will look much better =), what looks better?

Having the clothes in a floating look, such as the first photo.. OR
having the clothes on a model.. as in the second photo?

I realize that this is purely personal opinion but I am just trying to get an idea at what might sell better!

My thoughts are.. the floating look clothing looks better, and more professional than the clothes on a model with a cut off head. BUT from my experience, mostly on Ebay, clothes ON A PERSON always sell better than clothes on a mannequin (and in case you did not know, the first photo is really just the clothes on a mannequin, but the mannequin has been edited out). I suppose the ultimate solution would be to have the clothes on a person, but not have the head cut off (head cut off may look sloppy), but at this time that's just too hard for me to style!!!

Love to hear your thoughts! THANKS!!!!!!!!

Actually when I was browsing your site yesterday, I liked the photo's with the models that showed their full face shots the best.

By the way I got your 30% coupon emailed to me and I sent it on to all my contacts. I hope thats OK?

The floating pictures with NO model looks 1000% better and more professional.

Lol! : )

On topic:

Out of those 2, I'd choose the model one. The other looks wrong with the way you've cut the model out. It works with pants but not tops. You need to see the back inside or it looks odd. If you insist on having it looking like it would when worn, get a mannequin that cuts off at the neck instead of a human as it's less offensive to have a head cut off when it's not human:

Otherwise I'd lay it flat and do it like this:

Also side angles (45 degrees not 90) can look great..I suppose you'd say they're diagonals

Like this:

(cut out model/use mannequin of course)

My opinions and experience only.

P.S good trick saying you were that model, it got a lot of guys to help you : P

Also I wouldn't think this forum is the best place for that kind of advice but I suppose you could do worse! : )

TheyGotMeToo:

Yes, I agree that the shots with face are best! Styling the clothes is one thing, but styling face, makeup and hair is another. I could only handle doing it for a few!

And of course it was okay for you to send that code, in fact I thank you =)

Juicyas:

I get what you mean about not seeing the back inside. Those pics you provided actually gave me some good ideas.

And it wasn't a trick when I said that I am the model, I swear!!! It really is me, lol.

And I know this is a random place for this question, but I honestly find this to be one of the most personal forums with the best critiques and advice!

I'd say clothes on a person would be better.

I liked the photos you had before.

How do you get the floating image? It looks more professional

Id say no clothes on a person would be better to get traffic to your site.
One with the model is definitely better

If you look at popular clothing stores such as American eagle and Hollister they have models on the front page wearing the clothes then when you click on t's and polo's they have the clothes layed out like your first picture. usually they show one model wearing a polo. So I think you should have both. But don't cut the models head off. Look around at other online clothing stores to get ideas

I have to agree with Mr. Aspkin here. Clothes on a model always look better!

PS - Especially when you model is so damn HOT!!!!!

I like the first image of the floating clothes. This way you are only focusing on the piece of clothing and not distracted by the model.

Clothes on a model takes to much time between shots, while model changes clothes that they have to comb the hair look in the mirror and then finally ready for next shot

Take to clothes on and off a hanger a you're good to go in no time at all.

Time is money.
