| zippy | 05-09-2009 06:20 AM | old mac address now shows completly new ip? puzzled ? hi guys,
im haveing trouble with my ip.
i had same ip for a few months i made up useing own mac address in my netgear rouiter.
everythink was ok untill other day when the ip completly changed, i then done the usual reset modem and rouiter and put same mac address in and then it went back to my old ip so was happy.
a day later i hasd to switch off my modem and rouiter as was cleaning bedroom and then noticed it went back to the new ip again.
well for some reason i cant get the old ip back and whats strange is it states the mac in rouiter is the old mac i used, but its now showing a completly new ip address on my old mac ?
tryed resetting etc but for some reason i cant get old ip back but it seemed to work everytime before useing my old mac address entered in the rouiter to get the old ip but the old mac now just shows a completly new ip? |
| Vicvelcro | 05-09-2009 07:33 AM | That happens from time to time. Your ISP has a block of addresses to hand out. Each MAC address will get an IP dynamically. However, if some new MAC shows up (a new router or a spoofed MAC) somewhere in the same zone, it may snag the IP address that USED to be one assigned to you.
Also, if you power off your modem for 24 hours in most places (6 hours where I am) you'll get a new IP no matter what your MAC is or was. |
| zippy | 05-09-2009 07:41 AM | thanks mate but just a bit worried really as i used old ip on ebay as only have 1 account
but worried now as the ip has not just changed i.e last 2 digits its changed completley.
example ip start ( old 106 new ip example start 98 )
bit worried now going onto ebay as its a completly new ip and not similar to old ip completly diffrent. |
| GreenBean | 05-09-2009 07:54 AM | Have you a user account even though it's just one ebay account? ie, cookies, flash cookies etc. 'Cos I have had x4 complete changes of IP addresses without problems.:peace: |
| Vicvelcro | 05-09-2009 08:00 AM | My IP changes about 4 times per week on each of my active accounts. Hasn't been an issue. Sometimes I get an IP that starts with 65 sometimes 68 sometimes 73 and sometimes 172. With the 6 hour limit on IP release, it happens more than it used to. Still, no probs. I just make sure when a new IP gets assigned, I compare it to the list of IPs I've had before and make sure it doesn't match one I had for a login different than the login I want it to be.
That was long. Probably confusing. Sorry. It'll make sense if you drink a 12 pack and read it in a mirror. |
| zippy | 05-09-2009 08:03 AM | i only have 1 account i use on ebay / paypal to buy & sell greenbean.
i always delete flash cookies etec when finished.
was just a bit worried about logging into either with a foreign ip address as i once did it with paypal months ago my mistake and they sent me a email saying my account was hacked ?.
and concidering now my old mac is not working and got a complelty diffrent new ip from old just warry logging into either guys. |
| GreenBean | 05-09-2009 08:09 AM | Delete flash cookies?:pout: Damn, it's the Cookie Monster. viccccccccccc!:surrender: Help zippy,pleassssssse:thumb: |
| Vicvelcro | 05-09-2009 08:10 AM | If you are only using one account, it is better to keep the cookies and flash. Wiping it only makes you look guilty, in their eyes. |
| GreenBean | 05-09-2009 08:16 AM | ^^^What he said :thumb: |
| zippy | 05-09-2009 08:16 AM | yes true vic will keep flash cookies on 1 account.
thing that worres me is the new ip is completly diffrent every part of it ( all alot higher oclet numbers ) from last ip i use on fleabay and the new ip is not a ip simliar to old ip like people suggest to use i.e jst last 2 digits changed. the new ip is way off being similar every part of it to my old ip i used on fleabay.
wont ebay suspect anythink concidering its not similar to old ip and now a very diffrent ip logging in? |
| Vicvelcro | 05-09-2009 08:17 AM | Heh. Yeah, I'm working on it.
Zippy, I'll be around for at least another hour. Quote:

| Vicvelcro | 05-09-2009 08:20 AM | Zippy, the IP change is no big deal, unless you have multiple ebay/paypal accounts you want to keep separate. If that were the case, you only need to make sure the newest IP doesn't match an IP previously used with a different ebay/paypal login than the one you currently want to log in with.
Since you have one login for ebay/pp, don't worry about the IP. Don't nuke the cookies or the flash. Maybe clean up once every 2 weeks or so. But not constantly. |
| GreenBean | 05-09-2009 08:26 AM | Zippy, if you change your ISP & have a piece of gear break-down like a router, then you are going to have new numbers..... no biggie.:peace: |
| Vicvelcro | 05-09-2009 08:29 AM | Or if you had DSL, every time the power flickered, you'd get a new IP address. It's not entirely out of the ordinary. |
| zippy | 05-09-2009 11:22 AM | greenbean & vicvelcro thanks for putting my mind at rest guys :hs:
on a side note. i was on ebay in the past and was banned and was useing my orignal ip about 5 months ago so 99% sure i wont have same ip now as im with virgin and think there ips change after a certain time as i think they expire. |
| gurusgrafx | 05-09-2009 11:28 AM | I have a new ip everytime I log in to ebay and the numbers will be way off from each other. whole number groups change like what you said. never been a problem for me. |
| Vicvelcro | 05-09-2009 11:34 AM | Hey, Zippy.
It's always better to be careful than it is to be sorry. Whenever I see something strange or don't understand what's in front of me, I research or ask around before I let myself make the dumbest mistake. Well, ok, sometimes...
Asking is free. Mistakes are costly.
In this case, you're fine. IPs won't get you. If you start using more than one account, you need to pay closer attention though. | | All times are GMT -5. The time now is 11:24 AM. | |
