How do you change your IP address under Optimum Online?

ISP: Optimum Online
I use Cable.

I have 2 laptops, 1 apple and 1 windows VISTA along with an apple airport/router for a wireless connection. Everything was installed from the MAIN laptop which is the Apple-Mac.

How can I change my IP address?

UPDATE: I did hear about turning off your modem for 48 hours and turning it back on but that's IF your connected from the modem. I'm connected wireless using a MAC/Apple airport/router. They also told me another way is to get a new modem box since that will give you a different MAC address but the question is will that give me a different IP address while I'm still connected wireless to the same router?

Thank You

Call Optimum Online and ask if they have static or dynamic ip address. If you have a dynamic ip address then you need to change the MAC address of the router. If you have a static IP...not sure if you can change it or not.

They said It changes only when you disconnect your modem for 48 hours. I tried changing the IP address of my router and it just doesn't give me service at all. I did see the router has a "Router address" and a "IP address" I'm new to this but I would photo print everything if you're able to guide me. I'll even pay to be helped if necessary!

Thank You

What router do you have? Linksys? Netgear? D-Link?

OfficialGenius 08-03-2009 04:57 PM

Apple's Airport EXPRESS MAC Router. This one: Apple - AirPort Express

Not that many people use Optimum Online and that type router I think

Your customer support people suck. Sorry. They do.

If you can get a new IP by unplugging for 48 hours, it means you are dynamic. Which means you go into your router setup and find the WAN MAC address. Change the very last 2 pairs. Save the change. Reboot the MODEM. Not the router. NEW IP!

Since apple is a nearly non-existent platform, hardly anyone knows how to tweak or adjust them. Just not enough units for hackers to bother with. You find your WAN MAC, and you are good to go.

None of those. It's probably on the advanced tab. You are looking for the WAN MAC address. 6 pairs of digits separated by colons. 00:07:6F:3E:42:0C for example.

Thanks for all your help but I also heard that as a mac address is sort of hard coded to each network device and not dynamic like an IP address is.

I need to get back on business asap so is there any way possible I can use dial-up over my existing cable connection?

Vicvelcro 08-07-2009 01:29 PM

MAC address is easy to change. It's not hard coded.

You can indeed use dialup.
