Any techies out there? Please help!

I am just in the process of setting up stealth accounts. I have created new 'user accounts' on my mac and am now trying to change my ip address. I have a D-Link router and AOL UK as my service provider.

I have logged into my router's setup and I am given a list of tabs:

ADSL Setup
Wireless Setup
LAN Setup

If I got into ADSL setup it says that my IP adress setup is: 'PPPoE/PPPoA' - whatever the F*ck that means!! There are tick boxes where you can select Static IP or Dynamic IP, if I select 'Dynamic IP' it gives me the option to configure my mac address but when I go to save it nothing happens, which makes me think that perhaps my internet service provider has only give me a 'PPPoE/PPPoA' IP address.

If I go into LAN Setup it says 'DHCP Server Settings' where it displays my 'DHCP IP Address range' and and 'DHCP Lease time' (all of there are changeable). Below that there is a 'DHCP Table' -

Here there is a list of different IP addresses from a drop down box, I am able to manually change my mac address and the box on the right.

Which of these options should I change each time to get a new IP address each time?

Any help would be hugely appreciated!

Apparently lol, I think you may be able to change that though once you change the mac address...

You are in the wrong area all together. Those mac are just devices on the router. You dont change any of that.

You wont get a pull down menu to change IPs...

You need to change your WAN Mac

Should be something along the lines of "setup" > Manual internet setup. Or similar

Thats the mac that needs to be changed. It may be best if you just let the router do it. Write down the mac you have now and the IP it gives you. Reset router with reset button on back or bottom. It will reset whole device and should give a new mac/ip combo

Pod is right about you being in the wrong area and you needing to look for your WAN mac address.

I don't think resetting your router will change your MAC address though.

You'll need to change it yourself under WAN mac address.

Once you do that, then restart your router, restart your broadband modem and you should have a new IP address.

D-Link does. Well the 3 I have do anyway. Its not needed, but I was having one give me a hard time with the macs I was giving it, so a hard reset gave me one it liked.

Yeah that seems to work, if I shut down my comp turn the router off then turn both on again it seems to give me a different ip address every time. Sorted! so I will just shut down my router every time I log into a different user account.

Well it would be better to just make a list of a few macs and IPs. If you just do it random there are two issues:

You may accidentally repeat an IP. Not good
New IP every time is ok, but same one all the time is better

If you keep a log of the macs and IPs you can change mac easy, getting same IP. Way better control and much safer. Dont take the easy way out, it can bite you on the ass


EDIT: 3 Things actually. When you reset your router it clears all security/passwords. So if you dont set the passwords and wifi security [if its wireless] your neighbors can use your internet. And you dont want that. Never know what they are up to. You can change macs and it leaves security protocols in place

usually basic setting

will show: DNS
Subnet
Mac address

change the last 2 numbers of the mac address and click apply. wait for your connect to refresh. everything will be blank. As aspkin said, power cycle your modem and router. Pull the power plug out of teh back of teh modem and router. wait 30 seconds and plug it back in.

wait for the modem and router to power back up and the router to broadcast.
You will see your internet connect reconnect. Cycle the router page again and you will see the new mac address you made and the new ip. You can verify it by go to: IP Burger - What is my IP Address? Find Your IP Address! like aspkin said.

I see your point Pod, the trouble is I spoke to Aol and they said the type of IP address connection I have means that every time I connect to the web, I'll get a new IP ad, therefore I'm not sure if I would be able to control it and have different designated IP's for each ebay account. Also it appears from my router's setup page there is no option to change the 'wan mac address' so I think I'm just gonna have to stick with this strategy and hope that the same IP ads don't get repeated!

Oh, well you're set. Thats actually a nice thing to have for setting up multiple accounts

But very important: Keep a log. Whenever you log into a user write down the IP. This way you can make sure you dont accidentally overlap and use one IP with two users.

You can get a firefox plugin that shows ip in bottom corner every time you open it
