im trying to log into the router set up, i cant get in, my roommate has changed the name and password so i cannot access it, could i take the cable that runs to my computer and attach a router of my own and then i can set up that one to bypass it? or am i going to have issues cause of the other router down stream

I dont think you can have two modems for one ISP account.

ask your mate for the password or there should be a button on the router that when pressed will back the router to its default factory settings. type your route name/model to google with "i forgot password" you'll get the clear guidence.
