ip change on comcast all in one modem/router?

Anyone have success with this? I had uverse a couple years ago and the modem and router were built together and you couldn't change the ip because it was registered to that mac address and even if you spoof the mac it would restrict you from going online. I don't know if it is the same way on comcast but I wanted to see if anyone had success before I mess around with it

router and modem together will not restrict you from changing IP's. It is generated by your ISP. Your modem will have a fixed IP, but that's different. What service are you using? uverse?

My modem and router are built together but I can change IPs because my ISP use dynamics IPs.

But I can't change the MAC address, at least officially, I know there is a way by messing with the advanced settings but I don't have sufficient knowledge in this field.

It is comcast, what is the best way to change it?

Lheonard 08-05-2012 09:54 AM

^ No it is not, best way to change it is to buy a separate modem and router.

That's horrible advice....

Have you tried to change the ip by resetting the modem? leaving it off over night? If so, have you called comcast to see if you have a static ip?

Sorry I've read too fast, I thought you asked me if my modem was a comcast.

First you have to verify if your IP is dynamic, if it's the case all you have to do is unplug your modem for 1 or 2 minutes and replug it to have a new IP.

You can check if your IP changed with IP Burger - What is my IP Address? Find Your IP Address!

But if for whatever reason you also want to be able to change your MAC address, you will have to change you modem/router because you can't do it on a combined modem/router.

I just recently got Comcast and had the Xfinity combo router and modem. I tried using my old wireless router by plugging it into the Xfinity but it will not work! Although I changed the IP address like I did before it will not actually change anything because I lost about 4 accounts do to them all being linked. But no worries my friend there is a simple solution. Take your Xfinity to your local Comcast office and exchange it for a modem only and it's free. Problem solved! Then just use your own wireless router. Hope this helps.

I cannot change my IP address. I have Charter Comm and it seems to be locked or something. If I call Charter to have them give me a new IP address, how do I get a new IP address for each new stealth account I want to create? Am I limited to just one since I cannot change the IP address myself?

With stealth, we never think of being limited to one IP. LOL.

Firstly you would need to check if your IP is dynamic or static. If it's static, you would then consider other options to use for IP access such as a dongle or tethering.

Comes down to planning.
