Do I Need To Change My MAC Address If ReBooting Router Gives New IP?
 

Hello, my broadband connection is DSL Extreme, which is a Verizon DSL reseller. I am on DHCP so my IP address is dynamic. Even without messing with the router Mac address, I am given a new IP address everytime I reboot my modem.

In my situation, do I even need to change the last digit of my router's mac address? If I read the guide correctly, that is just to force your connection to change IPs. However if mine does that with just a re-boot, is the Mac address changing unnecessary?

Also, look how close my IPs are, it seems I am likely to be back on a previous one at some point. I am keeping a log, if one comes up I've used, is it best to re-boot again?

No need to change MAC address, as long as you get a new IP by rebooting the modem it's all good.

EDIT: actually I am subscribed but don't seem to be getting the emails anymore. Will investiage.

If one comes up you've used, yes, reboot again.

How do people get tens or hundreds of accounts and still find IP address that work> I imagine I only have 1,000 available to me, and if I login to 10 accounts a day pretty soon one would have a hard time finding an address that hasn't been used before.

It's all in the numbers.

Each new class of ip gives you 1,000 times more permutations.

That's a lot.
