Changing IP Address on Virgin Media using the Super Hub

For anyone is having the problem that I had for a few days with regards to Virgin Media using sticky IP's and making it very hard to change IP address there is an easy solution.

If you change your Super Hub to Modem mode, attach a separate wireless router to the Super Hub (I have used the netgear wgr614), you can then change the MAC address of the newly attached router to easily change IP address following the method set out in the Stealth Guide.

After you change the MAC address of the Router, turn off the Super Hub for 20 seconds, which it back on, and presto you have a nice new fresh IP address.

I couldn't find this solution on the forum anywhere myself so apologies if I am just repeating old information.

Hope this helps other Virgin customers

Ive just bought a dongle as im on Virgin...

In my case others in the house will be using virgin for another ebay account, so its best sticking with a dongle for stealth, still its good information though!

Any ideas on how to bypass Virgin and get on Piratebay etc?

JamesNorth101 05-05-2013 11:47 AM

Use a clone website, like malaysiabay

fuggles 05-05-2013 11:56 AM

use a piratebay proxy

Also, does it have to be a wireless modem I buy ? I prefer wired internet

But will Virgin change the IP if you just ring and ask ?

JamesNorth101 05-05-2013 12:00 PM

Using a wired one works just as well, same process.

I am not sure if virgin would change IP if you rang them, I have never tried that, but I would be ringing them 30 or so times a day.

Virgin might think that your upto no good

It actually wouldnt surprised me if Virgin gave eBay everyones details!

JamesNorth101 05-05-2013 12:14 PM

Not as likely as Sky selling them on at least :P

ebanned 05-05-2013 12:32 PM

True... Sky were garbage though, theres nothing worse than a night with no internet... Imagine using that as a defence for your slow shipping times... Sorry eBay but sky was down for the night, so I couldnt ship instantly, please dont bad me! :mad2:

BELKIN F5D5231 4 PORT WIRED ROUTER BROADBAND GATEWAY 606449021783 | eBay

Would that work ?

and what do I do ?

replace my virgin media hub with it ?

JamesNorth101 05-05-2013 03:28 PM

That would do the trick. All you have to do is log into your Super Hub, 192.168.0.1 is usually the IP for it.

You will see and option for turning the Hub into a modem, select that, then use a Cat5/6 patch cable to connect the Hub to the router (the cat5 input closest to the fiber optics input). Then set up your router like you would a normal router with a modem attached, instructions should be in with the router.

After all that is done you just need to log into the Belkin Router, change the MAC address, turn off the Virgin Hub for 20 seconds. When it turns on again you will have a new IP address.

I would take a note of the IP address before you start it all and after. When you change the mac address you just need to change one number to another number.

Usually they say POQ

Not receptive to that often.

:boink:

JamesNorth101 05-06-2013 10:10 AM

I cannot work out for the life of me what POQ stands for. Sorry if I am missing something something very obvious, but please do fill me in.

rsot 05-06-2013 01:00 PM

POQ in this sense would be Piss Off Quickly - I had to inquire around a bit too James - GB is queen of the net chat

JamesNorth101 05-06-2013 01:38 PM

Ha, yes I would imagine that that is what they would say. Good detective work rsot, appreciated and now I have some new net speak to ad to my vocabulary.

And a follow-up with GB's flair: "Use the knowledge well young Jedi" :P

Would you need a new modem for each ebay account ?

Or is one good enough for many accounts, providing I remember to change and check the IP for each account and make sure not to link them via an IP ?

JamesNorth101 08-02-2013 01:35 PM

One modem for all accounts is fine, just need to make sure you get a different IP address each time you log into a different account, and make sure you keep track of all the IP's

fuggles 08-07-2013 07:50 AM

Okay.

I have the new modem.

But all I did was go into
modem mode
attach the new modem
reset the superhub
and the IP had instantly changed ?

I did not need to go into the Mac settings ?

I suppose I just got lucky ?

JamesNorth101 08-07-2013 08:44 AM

If you want to change the IP address again, and when ever you want in the future you will need to go into the MAC settings :)

fuggles 08-07-2013 09:17 AM

When I go into the mac settings od the belkin router, I cannot access the internet. is that normal ?

secondly, changing the mac address of the belkin router did nothing. the IP stays the same.

Also, is there anything I can buy that could replace the superhub, that lets you change mac settings easier than this ?

JamesNorth101 08-07-2013 09:22 AM

You should have full access to the internet until you apply the new MAC address settings and reset the modem.
