VPS Question

Hi, I am looking to getting a vps. How should I set up the vps should I use it like a vpn? Or is there another way you suggest I use it like? I may be able to setup the vps like a remote desktop and access it anywhere to use if that is possible what ports need to be open?

Thank you

You should set up and think of the VPS as a separate computer that you are accessing. The VPS is what will show to the outside world.

So, set up your desktop. This is done for you by default if you are using a Windows VPS. If using a Linux VPS, you will have to choose the operating system (I recommend CentOS 5) and install GNOME or another GUI environment along with FireFox and RealVNC server for remote access.

Be sure that your stealth user's location matches the location of the IP address used by your VPS. It does not have to be the exact same city, but should be in the same area. For example, if your VPS uses an IP that is located in Los Angeles, CA then you do NOT want your stealth account user to be located in Chicago, IL.

Stay away from the $5 wonders and the larger providers. Larger providers are known to eBay/PayPal/Amazon and the cheap ones are overused AND tend to go out of business or change data centers abruptly. That could EASILY kill a perfectly good account.

If you use your VPS in this fashion, you won't have to worry about ports.

Of course, it is also possible to set up - if their rules allow it - a private VPN. But if you now have a different computer, why not take advantage of that?

Is Cent os The same type of desktop interface as Ubuntu. I had Ubuntu running on an old laptop and I got pretty familiar with that and Figured I may be able to utilize that on a vps and use it like a computer. There is a company that has vps services in my area I have used them a few years ago they offer vps services in a few different places in the us. and uk. But are not huge so not widley known.

Why?

Can you not use a dongle or other options?

Expand on your reasons.

There may be simpler ways and certainly less costly.

I was thinking vps because I can save files to it and use it like a second computer. I am not so into using multiple user accounts on my computer I have done that and It tends to slow the computer. Granted I have about 3 laptops 2 smart phones and 2 desktops.

I have 15 to 20 user accounts on the laptop I use for stealth, never experienced it slowing down.

Easy way to get around it though if you really want to avoid lots of user accounts on a laptop is getting lots of hard drives, or even bootable USB sticks.

Use the 2 phones for cellphone tethering too for IP address

If the computers dont ALL need to be on eB at the same time...one dongle would do the trick for the entire crew

You could amend your set-up and avoid VPS.

Other options exist.

Could even avoid cellphone tethering if done correctly.

Certainly cost-wise you could be much more efficient.
