Xfinity Ip Address Xfinity will not change my IP address and the steps that they have walk me through will not work. Does any one have any advice. |
| JamesNorth101 | 08-10-2013 03:14 PM | Phone tethering, new ISP, dongles or dial up |
| An0nym0u$ | 08-10-2013 04:11 PM | You shouldn't have to call XFinity to have your IP address changed.
The parent company of XFinity is Comcast (Xfinity is just a fancy new name for their higher tier packages).
Comcast assigns your IP address dynamically via DHCP unless you have a business class account. If you are a residential customer like me, then XFinity should be providing you with dynamic IP's. As a matter of fact, you have to PAY extra to Comcast to have a static IP!
I have Comcast at my house and can easily change my IP myself. You just need to change the MAC address of your modem, reboot your router and modem and you should have a new IP address. The entire process should take under 2 minutes. Try it yourself and post results. |
Comcast, Charter RoadRunner are Dynamic IP but it takes a miracle to get a new IP. |

| Dmshark25 | 08-10-2013 10:03 PM | Yep xfinity is great large group of IPs u just need to go into router settings change Mac and reset modem and router works everytime |
| GreenBean | 08-11-2013 07:43 AM | There seems some confusion here.....
why is it that some users are managing to change IP with Comcast yet others do not.
Bear in mind that one reporting a problem with getting a new IP knows how to carry out the procedure.
What is different amongst this?

| Dmshark25 | 08-11-2013 08:41 AM | Com cast recently added alot of online compatibility features with there services and just gave them self a new name XFINITY just a little marketing .
So comcast is xfinity |
| GreenBean | 08-11-2013 09:00 AM | @Dmshark25
I understand that. Just some can and some can not change IP

:juggle: | @Greenbean....The way I read OP's post, they called up XFinity to change their IP... Quote:

I have had Comcast for years myself (XFinity is their new name for their upper tier platform - see my post#3). I am fairly confident that Comcast is providing OP dynamic IP's via DHCP. The only way they can have a static IP is if they requested it (and it would cost extra) or if they have a business account w/ Comcast.
But alas, OP hasn't replied back. |
| Dmshark25 | 08-11-2013 12:41 PM | Yes I totally agree, when I first purchased the stealth guide the one thing that took me a week to figure out was changing the IP and this is with comcast ( xffinity ), so I called them and they don't tell u how to do it they just say turn ur modem off and it could change in 2 weeks.
Anyway the trick that I needed to do to get into my router settings for the first time was to reset everything first ANd than I typed in my browser 192.168.1.1 and it finally got me in the router . But before it would not get me in , so if anyone else had trouble with comcast xfinity reset everything first and than ur off to the races |
I don't have static I have dynamic. I can't change it with comcast. I do not have a static IP its supposed to be dynamic. However, even when I change the modem it stays the same. Quote:

I have comast, rebooting my box does not reset the IP. Calling them and asking them to do it does not reset it either. As far as changing the mac address of the modem....I asked about other ways and this did not come up at that time. I do not know how to change the mac address of my modem. Therefore, I started to tether, which is also not working as $50 5gb of tether is only giving me 3.5 hours of use as of now. (working on that issue) Would like to surely learn about how to change the mac address of my modem.
Is your comcast 2 boxes? Or modem and router in one?
Where can I find instructions on changing mac address on router? Directions I find say "log into your router" as the first step. Are there any other directions that go into detail on how to do that for those who are not familiar with "logging into a router". |
| amysol | 08-12-2013 02:14 PM | I just tried this:
unplugged modem
waited 1-2 min
run, cmn, ipconfig /release
received message: An error occurred while releasing interface local area connection : the system cannot find the file specified
Tried several times, always got this message (perhaps that is what it is supposed to say?)
waited 1-2 min, plugged modem in
typed: ipconfig /renew
A bunch of data came up, I checked my ip, and still the same, no change.
Still Can't find any info on how to change my mac address on modem ....
will keep u posted |

What happens when you type 192.168.1.1 (or in some cases, 192.168.0.1) in a browser; does it not take you to your router configuration settings page? |
| amysol | 08-12-2013 04:32 PM | xfinity arris tg862
192.168.1.1 doesn't do anything in the browser
The connection has timed out
The server at 192.168.1.1 is taking too long to respond.
I have other numbers if you need more info like SN CM MAC eMTA MAC and WAN MAC Let me know if any of that will help you understand this box. |
| An0nym0u$ | 08-12-2013 05:07 PM | The manual for your modem/router is here... http://www.arrisi.com/support/docume...tandard1-2.pdf
If you read my previous post, I also suggested to try 192.168.0.1 (which it does say is the correct one in your manual above).
I glanced through your manual. It looks like you cannot change your MAC address using the web interface.
Here is what I believe your options are...
1. Ask Comcast to exchange your Arris TG862 modem/router for just a standalone router (I have the Arris TM602G). NOTE: You will need to purchase your own router. (I have a Netgear N600 that works great).
2. Call Comcast and ask them to enable bridge mode. This will allow you to add your own wifi router.
3. Enable bridge mode yourself.... Access the modem interface by typing Http://192.168.0.1 into the browser, hit return and the modem interface with the user name and password entry input will appear on the screen. The default user name is “Admin” and the default password is “password” in lower case. Enter “password” and the basic set up page appears. Go to LAN setup and under Nat section select Bridged. Go to the Firewall tab and unselect “enabled” Security will be provided by your own wireless router. Under the wireless tab if the wireless is turned on uncheck enable wireless. Install your own wireless router in accordance with the instructions that came with it.
Having your own standalone wifi router allows you to easily change your IP address by modifying the MAC address of your wifi router. Best of luck, |
| An0nym0u$ | 08-12-2013 05:10 PM | By the way, I still haven't heard from OP regarding your make/model of router? |
| amysol | 08-12-2013 09:12 PM | Thats what I was thinking I'd have to do. I wonder if I should buy my own router or use another one from comcast cause they can give me a separate modem and router.
I tried both options http://192.168.0.1/ and 192.168.1.1 and neither worked as you may have already guessed.
Guess I will just get my own router...I think this gives me more control. Did you say you prefer netgear over linksys?
Are there anyway to save threads that we want to visit back again? |

Every manufacturer makes a base, intermediate, and high level version of their routers. Each will have their own separate pros and cons on their routers.
Choosing a router for your home use is based on...
1. What are your needs? Are you going to connect multiple wifi devices (such as 10 or so)? 10 devices might seem like a lot like you, but in my home...I have a PS3, XBOX, Roku, my wife's cell, my cell, wife's laptop, Apple TV, an iPod. All of these devices need wifi at some point. This doesn't include the desktop PC that has a wired connection to the router. This is typical of most households nowadays.
2. What is your budget? The old saying, you get what you pay for applies. If you want to spend $30, you will get a decent router that may not work well 6 months from now. Plan on spending around $50 for reasonable router.
For the most bang for the buck, I choose the Netgear N600 which handles all my wifi devices and was cost effective at ~$65 at the time of purchase. (Maybe it is cheaper now).
I suggest reading reviews on routers on CNET or PCMag to make an informed decision. You can also see a comparison of specs here of the top 10 home routers (notice Belkin had the lowest rating). | amysol | 08-14-2013 02:26 PM | Ok. now I need some help. I got belkin N600 since they didn't have netgear. I have followed the steps, I have accessed the router page, access wan mac address, and changed a number and save, it automatically resets....BUT does not go back online. I put it back the way it was, and it reset and went back online. I tried again changing a different part of the number, and it rest and did not go back online. I put it back again and it reset and went back online.
This tells me that it's not letting me change the wan mac address for some reason. Has anyone had any experience? I also bought a netgear 300 to try....though we have 9 wifi items and this belkin allows for wifi printing and we have a larger size home so we need a good router...
I'd like to see if I can make this Belkin work for those reasons. Does anyone know anything about this issue? |
| An0nym0u$ | 08-14-2013 02:43 PM | That's right, it's not supposed to go online. All you did (according to what is written here) is reset the router. You need to reset your modem after changing the router's MAC address.
Basically, all you're doing is spoofing the router's MAC so the modem thinks its a new device. When you go back to the old MAC of the router...the modem says OK I know this device and assigns the old value of the IP that's tied to it. So you are back online w/ the old IP.
Try it again, but this time reboot the modem after you make changes to your Belkin router's MAC address. |
| amysol | 08-14-2013 02:55 PM | Ok, so make the changes and save thenew mac address, but the router will attempt to reset, and not go back on. Then reboot the modem. ANd then what? How do I get the router back on? |
| amysol | 08-14-2013 06:56 PM | Got it! Thanks again as always! You're such a fabulous contributor to this forum! |
| An0nym0u$ | 08-14-2013 08:03 PM | Worked? Nice! Glad you got it going. |

Then reboot both your Belkin router and cable modem (it says to restart your computer too, but you may not need to necessarily do this). You should then check ipburger.com to make sure you have a new IP. Belkin USA Site | | All times are GMT -5. The time now is 07:55 AM. | |
