My IP address no longer changes!
 

Hi. Just got my stealth accounts started recently. I have Verizon Fios Actiontec router and I have been using the following method to change my IP for the past week:

Go into router setting, find option to click "release", wait for orange light on router, unplug, leave powered off 5-10 mins, plug back in, and BOOM new IP.

This has never been a problem until today when I was issued an IP earlier on and am unable to get rid of it. I tried doing the above method but leaving router unplugged for 1.5-2 hours with no luck. I tried just clicking release IP then renew without unplugging but that did not work either. Same IP, always.

What can I do shake this IP and bring up another one? I am looking into getting a plan for tethering with my smartphone, but until then I need to somehow get assigned a new IP from verizon so I can log into my other accounts! Do they limit the number of times you can change IP? Any help would be appreciated!

Do you have a separate modem from the router? Why not power down that modem and see if you get new IP (you should by the way)?

I took a look and it seems like inside my home there is only the verizon actiontec router but no modem. Outside there is a box from fios, but i am not sure if this is the modem as it doesnt look like any modem i have ever seen. I dont know how to power it down. :/

It's just so weird that verizon kept giving me
New IPs and then just stopped suddenly like that!

Have you tried changing the MAC address via the web gui interface?

Log into 192.168.1.1 on any browser

Once logged in, you need to change the last digit of the MAC address of your router and save the changes. It should be under MAC Cloning within the Advanced screen.

Once done, reboot your router and log back in again to check whether your IP has changed.

Okay well I unplugged the router as with the usual method I been using but this time I unplugged the coax cable as well and it FINALLY gave me a new IP! I didn't even leave it unplugged for 5 minutes but, still, new IP!

Not sure if unplugging the coax had anything to do with it though...

Anonymou$, not sure if im just an idiot or what but I can't find the Mac Cloning. Which advanced screen are you talking about?

I have heard of issues like this on a tech forum. The original thread said to unplug the router for several hours. If it doesn't work, you might need to do it several times. Some claimed it worked, other claimed it didn't. Maybe try that.

Glad you were able to at least get a new IP by unplugging the coax cable (I also do this when I reboot, even though it is not necessary). Good thing that it was as simple as that.

I found it on section 8.2d.

If that is not the correct router manual, there is a full list here. They just seem to be different by firmware.

This happened when I was first trying to change my IP.

When I disconnected the coax is when it changed.

So when it doubt disconnect everything.

Also for anyone else reading check to see if there is a battery back-up on the modem and/or router and disconnect that too.

Good tip! The model I have (Arris) has a battery backup. I unplug both power cable and coax as practice. Some models may have their backup battery kick in during loss of power, so that is good advice to follow.

I tried this and now my router is stuck on "waiting on dhcp lease" and my Internet is down and not working with an amber light on the the router under Internet

It seems to be fine now, as I am getting a new IP each time I disconnect the power and Coax cables.

Just to let you guys know, I am once again getting the same IP over and over even while unplugging the power AND coax. If you need to run multiple stealth accounts with efficiency, I do believe this method with the fios is not the best way to change your IP. I'm going to look into setting up a personal hotspot on my phone, as this seems to be a much more effective and time-saving method.
