Ethernet connection changing IP address & Other IP questions
 

Hello:)
So, I'm living in a dorm, and the school provides ethernet ports. I would like to ask how can I change an IP address if my computer is connected to the ethernet port through a LAN line. Is it possible if I add router between the ethernet port and my computer? Thanks in advance!

Dorm? Then you cant change the IP without having access to the main modem room of the dorm....virtually impossible. Router can be added but it won`t help.

Usual set-up at these places is restricted access.

You will need to consider other choices.

Your school would not like a couple of hundred students all doing their own thing on the local network.

Public IP Address and IPv4 Address Difference?

I'm confused about my public IP address that google search tells me, and the IPv4 address. Basically, my public IP address stays the same across all my devices, but the IPv4 address is different with all the devices, which one should I be worrying about?

The address you can see when you go to IP Burger - Track Your IP Address! is the one you need to worry about.

Local addresses do not matter, public address does.

You're comparing internal IPs to external. Your internal or LAN network will most likely be within the 192.168.0.0/24 subnet range.

Each of your devices will have an internal (or non routable) IP such as 192.168.1.1, 192.168.1.2, and so on.

Your external (or NAT) IP is how the rest of the world sees you. All of your devices will have the same external IP that gets assigned to you by your ISP, and this is the one you need to change.

There is a big risk that the library may be used by someone who has had issues with ebay/paypal.

You are really wiser to use a dongle or tethering to control your IP access.

Please consider this option carefully.

You want to stay away from any type of public internet source, this to include libraries, starbucks, malls, etc.

Best bet as previous posts have stated, look into a dongle or tethering your phone.

Sigh ...any public IP could have been already used by many :(
