XFinity Wireless Gateway

Hi, I have Comcast/Xfinity and a wireless modem with a built-in wireless router. I'm using my desktop hooked into the ethernet cable but I also have a laptop and an iPod.

Model: TG862G/CT XFinity Wireless Gateway

Manual and photo: http://media2.comcast.net/anon.comca...ide_030811.pdf

Dynamic IP address: yes

I wasn't sure which option in the book I would use to change my IP address, but other posters are talking about having to get a new router and model to make the IP change successful.

I wanted to confirm that I would not be able to change my IP with the methods in the book as long as I have this Wireless Gateway? I am reading the book cover to cover and taking notes now so I have not yet set up a user account. I am using my primary EB account which is not suspended.

Thanks for your help.

I did go into my configuration online and it looks like the only way to change the MAC address that way is to select 'Reserved IP" vs. the dynamic DHCP:

Edit Device
Host Name: xxxxx
Connection: Ethernet
Configuration: DHCP
Reserved IP
MAC Address: xxxxxx

Those all-in-ones have issues where it is very difficult to change the MAC address. It is doable, but a bit complex.

Your gateway is 10.0.0.1, which you can put in your browser to get to your Administration page.

Basically with these, what you need to do is put it into bridge mode. Then you would have ability to access the router part of your all-in-one by going to 192.168.100.1:8080 (or whatever the manual says is the address of your router).

From the router page, you should then be able to alter your router's MAC address so you can obtain a new external (WAN) IP.

My advice would be to go to Comcast & exchange it for a standalone modem.

Then, purchase your own router (some decent ones for around $50 - I prefer the Netgear line).

This setup is much easier for most people.

Don't rent their modem, go buy your stand a lone cheap modem like An0nym0u$ said. Buy on ebay for cheap. It is much easy to work with the stand a lone modem

If you are using the same IP address as you are using for the forum, it appears to be staitic.

Check for yourself...

Here is a way to check if you have a Static or Dynamic IP address...

Check your IP here... What Is My IP Address? Lookup IP, Hide IP, Change IP, Trace IP and more...

Then click the gray box where it says "Additional IP Details" and it will let you know if yours is dynamic or static next to where it says Assignment:

Thanks kindly for the replies--especially re: telling me my IP is static! I will do a switch, thanks.

Yes I think so; the last time I went in they gave me the two-in-one (which was only about 4 months ago).

For stealth operations, it is better to have your own equipment.

That way you can access manuals easier and not rely on help desks where staff are not properly trained.

Good Luck

Hm, that's odd because when I open run-cmd--ipconfig/all it says the my lease starts 10/11 and expires 10/18. Also it says "DHCP Enabled? Yes" under ethernet adapter local area connection 1 and 2.

"IP Routing Enabled?" is set to "no." I guess I will see once i get a Netgear router.
