| gresty | 01-17-2014 01:06 PM | IP Address Hi,
I'm in the process of trying to set up a stealth account, I've got as far as setting up a new ip address and I'm completely lost!
I have been on ip burger, noted down my current ip address. I don't know if there is a difference between a router and a modem but I just have a modem. I don't have a manual for this so I don't know how to access the setup page (typing 192.168.0.1 in my browser doesn't work).
I would be very grateful for some help please. Thanks |

What modem you got and who is your service provider. If sky or bt it is easy to get a new ip. |

Reopen your browser and IP Burger to check you IP again. It will probably have changed.
There is no need to access the setup page to change IP if your service is dynamic.
All you need to do is turn it off and on again. |

192.168.0.1 gets me to the hub page.
Question is what do I change the mac address to?
Is it just the last two letter? or one of the letters?
and what to? does it matter? |

Not much will work.
You could consider getting another dongle.

:bump:
and if I re-insert one or two of the letters it will predictively give me back that same IP. Is this what we do, to control which IP we're logging into for which account? |

Now I need a new router
Can I really not do it through accessing the Hub, like this? |

Can I really not do it through accessing the Hub, like this? | If you use media access control on the router, changing that will cause the device to stop being able to connect. That's only a green list of sorts, assigning static local addresses to other networked devices identified by the MAC. |

"route -n get default", without the " " then press return. You'll get a window like this.
It's the bit next to "gateway" that will tell you the address you need to connect to in order to get router settings.
Note that it doesn't matter what you change in there, you're only changing local IP settings. If you want to change how you are seen on eBay or amazon, you'll need to change your external IP.
TalkTalk consumer broadband has dynamic IPs so all you need to do is turn your modem on and off to change the IP. TalkTalk business however only provides static IPs: If this is your contract, you cannot change your IP without talking to TalkTalk first. |

Turn it off, leave it a few minutes and turn it back on. It'll get a new IP you can check on whatsmyip.com and if it's not different, just repeat. |

Is the only way with VM to turn it into modem and attach another router as has been mentioned?
alternatively get a dongle, right? |

It may be as easy as that, but that depends on the lease time that each MAC address has on an IP.
Record your IP, turn the box off, turn it on, compare new IP. If its changed your good to go. Quote:

Many users have a Static IP with Sky.
I checked your IP & it does appear to be static.
Your option will be to consider a dongle.
