Default Question about IP from new user

Hi I am new to this forum, been selling for 8 years and just had my accounts indefinitely suspended. I purchased the Stealth Book and can't get past the changing the IP address section. I have ATT for my Internet provider and called them and was told that I have a dynamic connection. In reading the forum it seems that it is not??

Thank you so much

Grace..

Proxies and public VPNs are a BIG No No.
You can search the forum, you'll find how to change your IP address and it's not complicated if you have a Wifi router.

Which methods have you tried in order to change your IP Address?

Also, some providers are Dynamic but that doesn't mean they will easily change the IP address. For example, I have Time Warner which is Dynamic but it's super difficult to change IP address.

There are alternatives if you can't manage to change IP's with your provider, A dongle ( USB Modem), and mifi's work.

I'm Not Familiar with ATT, but I think (hope) that the following will work :

1- You'll need to download a software named Mac Changer ( download Link : Technitium MAC Address Changer - Free download and software reviews - CNET Download.com).

2- Using this software, you'll change (spoof) your Mac address (The one of your Wireless device).
3- Once the mac address changed, go to your router settings (Usually accessible through 192.168.1.1), then open the Mac Address parameters page.
4- At this point You'll ''Clone'' the ole Mac address to the new one you just had.

5- Wait for the router to restart automatically (30 sec or so), once back, you should have a new Ip address.

Hope that this will help

I am almost embarrassed to admit, I don't even know what the modem is. I know that the router is what actually connects the internet to wifi because it says it on the box I unplugged. would the modem be a box of some sort as well. I am sorry I am not a computer person, Any additional help would be appreciated, I have purchased the Stealth Book and am stuck on this step. Thank you so much for any help you can offer

No problem grace - the modem is what actually connects to the Internet - router (usually) connects to the modem to spread the signal for more than 1 computer.

So the box you unplugged...does it connect to another box that connects to the Internet? Need more information on the setup

Sadly if you spoke to a Level 1 customer support person they will give that mis-information.

I ran your IP and it is shown as STATIC. Not going to be easy to change ( if at all).

You described your set up as being AT &T Verse WIRE. 99% of the time I have found this to be a Static IP 7 not changeable. Switching on/off will do exactly what you said. Show the same IP.

Your other options might be tethering and dongle.
Good Luck

Your best options are dongles, tethering or swapping to another ISP.

The only way you can really change your IP if its static is to ring the ISP ever time to ask them to release and reassign it.

Not necessarily. I'm unsure AT&T's policies when it comes to IP issuing, but it may be a simple case of them taking a long time to actually release the IP.

I'd suggest leaving the modem/router/connection off overnight or for an extended period of time before plugging it back in, seeing if that makes it change. If that doesn't then I'd be fairly certain it is a Static IP.

Take a not of your IP both before and after using whatsmyip.com or similar.

MAC addressing only pertains to local networking, so this won't affect the external IP.

MAC address are what the ISP assigns an IP to.

Change the MAC address and you change the IP when your IP is dynamic

That software only lets you change your MAC on your NIC rather than your router, at least from what the instructions let on.

From quick investigation it looks like AT&T assign an IP statically with a 168-hour lease timeout. I'm not sure what qualifies as a 'compatible' router there, so I'm not sure if swapping it out would even allow you to connect to the internet, but it should theoretically allow you to change IP should it work.

Otherwise, you'd need to leave it disconnected for 168-hours / 7 days before your IP will be released and you can be assigned a new one.

Using this method (A well known method here in the forums) since about 5 years . I guess I was just lucky (?) since it worked all time for me.

I have no knowledge with AT&T Internet connexion, this is why I said that it may not work with them . But if the IP is dynamic, the above method will work.
Unfortunatly, this will not help the OP, but hopefuly other members (readers) will find it helpful

This is deffo a static IP.

Hence why I posted what I did.

IPs with this type of modem are not always sticky, even if we would like them to be.

I appreciate everyone's help on this ... I am so frustrated by the different info I have gotten from ATT at this point I am going to look into the dongle and see what that is all about. Hopefully it is something that I will be able to understand and get working on right away. Again.. Thank you

But you dont need to add hotspot to it - cant you turn your galaxy 4 easily for cellphone tethering without changing the plan?

rsot is correct.

I also have a Samsung Galaxy s4 and I see it is there. No need to jailbreak phone for this, as it is standard.

Just go to Network Connections > More Networks. You will see it on the next screen called Tethering and Mobile Hotspot
