You have to pay extra per month for these right?

Re: What is a dongle?

Yes you would need to pay the cellphone provider's monthly fee for a data plan.

Tethering is essentially the same thing, but could be free if it's included in your cellphone plan.

Are they used with a wireless router?

Re: What is a dongle?

It's more like they are routers themselves. After you plug it into a USB port, you will see it among the list of available wifi connections near you. And then you can connect to it just like any other wifi, except it runs on the cell phone provider's 3G/4G network so the speed and reception can vary depending on your area.

You don't need a router. The dongle serves as a wireless modem and router built into one - will provide wireless IP if you have a provider that supports dongle use

Depends on the set-up.

Ensure you get reception for your area to make speeds are OK

Ok I have AT&T so I need to give them a call and see if I can get dongle service in my area.

I was told that I can get a new IP address faster with a dongle rather than turning my modem on and off every time and waiting 30 secs for new IP and another 30 secs for it to reboot. 1 minute is a long time when your constantly flipping between accounts lol.

DON'T go with AT&T, their IP pool is very small with the 4G/LTE. Go with Verizon if you can.

Do you think dongle is better than regular cable internet with netgear or is it just similar. Because i use comcast with netgear router and change a digit or 2 on the mac on router settings than turn off and on. I get a new ip that way. But lately i been getting 0 limit accounts.

A Dongle is a self contained device that provides internet service to your computer. Here is what you have to know about Dongles/Mifi's:
1. Most run on 4G/LTE
2. Speeds will depend/vary on your location
3. MOST are easy to change IP (Turn Off/Turn On)(Unplug/Plug In)
4. Most require software
5. IP Pool will vary on Provider/Location

As far as your 0/0 issue.....this won't be fixed by a Dongle alone, there are other factors at play there.

Also, Please take the advice we give with a grain with salt, in the end its up to you on what you do, we are not responsible if things don't workout how you wanted them too....

Re: What is a dongle?

Question. I'm thinking of getting a dongle today. My issue is when I check my ebay accounts, I disrupt anyone using wifi in the house. If my wife is on the other computer using wireless, I hear her yell as soon as I reset the modem. Haha.

So will the dongle have its own Network so I won't disrupt my current wireless setup?

So with a dongle you have to set it up with your wireless provider correct? Couldn't ebay look up the name its registered to and find out your real name/information?

No that info is not readily shared with eB.

@aking, having a dongle on its OWN network will not affect your wife's wireless antics :) Separate IPs
